Panchayath development officers stage dharna against harassment

Udupi, October 20: Protesting against the torture and high handedness of representatives of the people, over 55 PDOs under the banner of Pachayath Development Officers' Welfare Association, Udupi district, staged a demonstration infront of the Zilla Panchayath Office, here on Wednesday.

Agitators submitted a memorandum, addressed to the Chief Minister, to the Zilla Panchayath CEO Prabhakar Sharma. In the memorandum they said in Udupi district too, PDOs of Hebri, Hejamady, Hirgana, Mundkur, Kokkarne, Badanidiyoor, Shirva, Hattiyangadi and Kadekar had been frequently tortured and all of them are women PDOs.Agitators submitted a memorandum, addressed to the Chief Minister, to the Zilla Panchayath CEO Prabhakar Sharma. ZP CEO Prabhakar Sharma, after receiving the memorandum said that they palnning to hold a training for PDOs and GP Presidents on handling the issues. He said, PDOs can share some of the crucial issues affecting the exercising op their duties. Mangaluru, Jun 13: A bus agent died after the compound wall of his house collapsed on him at Matadagudde, near Gurupura-Kaikamba, on Friday afternoon. This is the first rain-related death reported in Dakshina Kannada.

The victim is Narayana Naika, 52. According to police, heavy rain on Friday afternoon blocked a small water stream adjacent to his compound wall, and the deceased was clearing it. The stone compound wall then suddenly collapsed on him, and he got buried underneath. He sustained grievous head injuries and died on the way to hospital.

Narayana is survived by his wife and two children.

Dakshina Kannada received an average rainfall of 26.1mm in the last 24 hours till 8.30 am on Friday. The highest rainfall was recorded at Puttur and Mangaluru taluks at 31.3mm and 30.3mm, respectively. Bantwal and Sullia taluks received 26.3mm and 24.6mm of rain, respectively.

Udupi, June 26: BJP leader K Raghavendra Kini has been appointed as the new Chairman of Udupi Urban Development Authority (UUDA) by Government of Karnataka.

A well-known businessman, Raghavendra Kini is also serving as the president of Kunjibettu Consumers’ Multipurpose Co-operative Union.

Along with him, the State Government has appointed Suma Naika, Praveen Kumar Shetty and Kishor Kumar as members of the Authority.

Hubballi, Jan 15: Leaders of the Muslim community, Dalit organisations, Congress Party, and others are staging a hunger strike at Dr B R Ambedkar Circle in Hubballi, opposing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).

Raising slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, they demanded the withdrawal of the CAA and not to implement NRC.

"India is witnessing such a dictatorship for the first time. The BJP government is trying to divide people into the lines of religion, through CAA and NRC. This move is a threat for peace and harmony in the country," said AICC member Shakir Sanadi, who led the protest.

Sayed Tajuddin Quadri, Moulana Niyaz Alam, Moulana Nayimuddin and others took part in the hunger strike.

Former minister A M Hindasgeri, former MP I G Sanadi, F H Jakkappanavar, Pitambrappa Bilar, and others also extended support to the protest.
