Mangalore, October 21: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat will soon have a vigilance squad to check illegal sale of fertilizers in the open market.

Considering the seriousness of the issue of sale of fertilisers in open market illegally and the impact it has on farmers, the Zilla Panchayat has resolved to constitute squads to keep a vigil on the same.

The decision was taken during the general body meeting of the Zilla Panchayat held on Thursday at the ZP hall, with ZP Chief Shailaja Bhat in chair.

The squad with officials from the agriculture department, horticulture department and Zilla Panchayat with the help of police will visit private dealers who sell fertilisers at higher price.

Congress member K S Devaraj brought to the notice of the chair that while co-operative societies and horticulture department outlets sell only urea and suphala, these outlets do not have the array of varities that is available with the private agents in the district.

“These private agents sell fertilisers at a much higher price, thereby exploiting the farmers,” he said.

Responding to the same, ZP Chief Executive Officer K N Vijayprakash said that this matter needs to be brought to the notice of the police and the district administration.

The CEO directed officials of the agriculture department to prepare statistics of total quantity of fertilisers released by the government and the actual demand in the district. “Furnish details regarding the quantity of fertilisers supplied to co-operative societies in the district,”he added.

Arecadiseases Rot and yellow leaf disease in areca plantation became a matter of discussion during the meeting. When members from Sullia taluk said that six villages have been affected by these diseases leaving the growers in lurch, Vijayaprakash said that the government has released Rs 2.82 crore to compensate the losses incurred to areca nut growers due to fruit rot and yellow leaf diseases through Revival scheme.

He said that a total of 1,882 hectares of arecanut farms in the district have been affected due to yellow leaf disease. Meanwhile, 27,668 hectares of farms were affected by fruit rot disease. There was a drastic reduction of 45.5 per cent in the areca nut yield due to these diseases, he said adding that a proposal of Rs 172 crore has been sent to the government to solve the crisis.

He further said that under the revival schemes, the planters can plant another saplings in the place of affected tree but the indepth study of the issue has shown that replanting of new sapling in same place affects the new sapling with the disease.

Show cause

The CEO directed the officials to issue show cause notice to Bantwal Block Education Officer (BEO) K Sudhakara as he has allegedly failed to furnish necessary information with regard to usage of Rs four lakh for development of a school at Montepadavu in Bantwal taluk.

ZP member Santhosh Kumar had said that though records show that Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat Government Higher Primary School in Montepadavu has been provided a new building at a cost of Rs four lakh, a new building has not been constructed for the school.

Vijayaprakash took Sudhakara to task when he failed to give details about the issue and warned him of stern action in case he fails to reply to the show cause notice.

Disposal in 15 days

The CEO said that taking the hope of the CM that all the files in the offices should be cleared within 15 days, he has personally started following the same promptly. Steps have been taken by the CEO to see to it that the officials do not make people run from pillar to post for signatures.

Bengaluru, Jun 29: The results of second pre-university and the Secondary School Leaving Certificate examination results will be out by July last week and August first week, Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar said on Monday.

Instead of giving general promotion to the 10th and 12th standard students as the Central Board of Secondary Education and other states have done, the Karnataka government decided to hold the examination defying the coronavirus scare.

"We are trying to get the SSLC results out by the first week of August. The PUC results will be out in the last week of July," the minister told reporters in Bengaluru.

Amid reports of schools increasing the school fees ignoring the government's direction, the minister said he has got reports that 1,150 schools have increased their fees of which action has been taken against 450 schools.

"We have directed all the schools not to increase the fees in view of the coronavirus scare.

It is a peculiar year.Humanity says no one should increase fees.

We have set up a helpline. If we come across such practices, we will initiate action," Kumar said.

He said an officer has been entrusted to look into the complaints against schools.

Speaking about online classes for kindergarten students, the minister said such classes are not allowed.

The schools can hold talks with parents twice a week about grooming their children.

Kumar said a decision on opening kindergarten schools will be taken after July 5.

He, however, conceded that most parents are unwilling to send their children to school.

The government is gathering the opinion of parents based on which a decision would be taken, he added.

Regarding education to students from Class one to Class 10, Kumar said the Centre has given guidelines, which will be followed.

The state has formed an expert committee to recommend guidelines on education to children from Class I to Class six.

"Once the committee report comes, we will formulate regulations," Kumar added.

Yadgir, July 2: A fresh video of the health staff dragging the body of a Covid-19 victim and dumping it into a pit disgracefully has gone viral on social media.

The incident occurred in Yadgir district of Karnataka on Tuesday, just days after shocking visuals of bodies of Covid-19 victims being handled disrespectfully in Ballari district went viral.

In the fresh video, two persons with PPE suits can be seen dragging, hurling and dumping the dead body of a senior citizen who died of covid-19. The duo dragged the body using a wooden log inserted to both hands of a plastic body bag for nearly 300 meters.

After pulling till the pit, the body was heartlessly dumped including a wooden log. Several villagers were also seen in the video.

The victim was settled in Siravara in Raichur district, although he originally hailed from Yadgir. On Sunday he was busy overseeing his daughter' wedding that was first postponed due to lockdown.

According to a relative of the deceased, on Monday he complained of breathing problems following which an ambulance was called to carry him to Raichur Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS).

Raichur Deputy Commissioner (DC), R Venkatesh said he was brought dead to the hospital as he succumbed en-route. The family members were quarantined and the body was packed as per the protocols and sent to Yadgir as his family members informed that the victim is from the neighbouring district. "In Yadgir district he was swabbed and his test results came positive," DC informed.

As soon as residents of Honagera village learned about the arrival of the body, the family members were harassed asking them to not to bury the body in any of the fields in the village.

Sridevi, a relative of the deceased said "the locals assembled near our house and threatened consequences if the body was brought here. Fearing backlash, we asked the district authorities to perform the last rites in the farmland owned by the victim. But it is now saddening to see the video where the body was inhumanely dragged and dumped."

Meanwhile Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Wednesday (July 1, 2020) said that six staff members have been suspended in connection with the inhumane funeral of a man who died of COVID-19 in Balari district.
