Mangalore, October 21: Mangalore City Police and Dakshina Kannada district police jointly observed the police commemoration day at the police memorial site of District Armed Reserve premises here on Friday in memory of the 636 police and paramilitary personnel from throughout the country who laid down their lives in the line of duty during the previous year.

The names of all of them including 10 police personnel from Karnataka were read out on the occasion.

The tradition began in 1960 to salute the deaths of 10 members of a small patrolling party of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), who laid down their lives in an attack by the Chinese at Hot Springs, near Aksai Chin on October 21, 1959.

As part of the ceremony the police flag was flown at half mast and a police patrol fired three rounds in the air.

Addressing the gathering, Deputy Commissioner N S Channnappa Gowda said that the policemen have to discharge their duties in unusual conditions and circumstances where the element of risk is much more than for the common man. Therefore, basic amenities like healthcare, proper accommodation should be provided to police community, he said.

Chief Guest Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy, Vice Chancellor of Mangalore University said that hot pursuit of criminals, combating armed miscreants and terrorists and deployment in rescue operations leave the policemen exposed to high risk and the men in khaki brave these conditions undeterred even if they have to give their life.

He said since education and police departments are substantial for a healthy society, both the departments are equally important.

IGP (Western Range) Alok Mohan, City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, SP Laburam, Additional SP Prabhakar, KSRP Commander Ramdas Gowda, Homeguard Commandant Nidarsh Hegde, MLC Ganesh Karnik, District Information Director Rohini K, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayprakash, , NMPT Vice President T S N Moorthy and others were present.

Bengaluru,  Jun 28: Sixteen deaths due to COVID-19 and 1,267 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Karnataka, according to information provided by the State Health Department.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Karnataka has reached 13,190, including 783 cases from Bengaluru Urban. While 7,507 patients have been discharged after treatment, 207 deaths have been reported, said the health department.

With 19,906 new cases, the highest single-day spike so far, India's COVID-19 count touched 5,28,859 including 2,03,051 active cases, 3,09,713 cured/discharged/migrated, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. 410 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours and the cumulative toll reached 16,095 deaths.

Bengaluru, Mar 27: In a preparatory measure to tackle any exigency in the backdrop of spread of coronavirus, the Karnataka government has asked district administrations to use as quarantine centres the residential schools and hostels that come the under Social Welfare department.

"Wherever necessary, these residential schools and hostels can be converted as quarantine facility without any extra cost by the district administrations," Deputy Chief Minister Govind Karjol said in a statement.

The total number of COVID-19 cases in Karnataka stood at 55, including two deaths and three discharged persons, as on Thursday.

Karjol, who is also the Minister in-charge of Social Welfare department said, in view of holidays for educational institutions, there were no students staying in the residential schools and hostels and hence they can be used for quarantine purpose.

All the residential schools at hostels in districts and taluks are spacious and have all required facilities like rooms, kitchen, toilets, bathrooms, libraries among others, the Minister said adding most of them were located away from densely populated areas.

Bengaluru, May 12: People returning to Karnataka from other states will have to remain in quarantine">institutional quarantine even if they are asymptomatic, according to Department of Health and Family Welfare Services, Government of Karnataka

"All persons returning to Karnataka from any State, symptomatic or asymptomatic shall be kept in quarantine">institutional quarantine," read an order issued by the State Health and Family Welfare Services.

It further read, "For persons claiming to come from Goa, Deputy Commissioner of receiving district should verify and in the event of adequate capacity not being available, can put them in home quarantine for a period of 14 days, if the claim regarding the origin state is confirmed."

"Deputy Commissioner/Special Commissioner, BBMP will fix the rates for hotels where such returnees will be staying on a payment basis," the statement read.
