Mangalore, October 23: Mild tension prevailed in the city on Sunday morning as unidentified miscreants targeted the statue of St Theresa installed at St Theresa's School Bendur, Mangalore.

The transparent fibre cell of the statue was completely damaged when the miscreants pelted stones in the early hours.

It is said that three people, who came on a motorbike between 4:00 am and 4:30 am pelted stones at the statue and windows of the school. No outfit has so far claimed responsibility for the incident.

When watchman at the school, who woke up to the noise, rushed to prevent the miscreants, they fled the scene, said Sr Premitha, the principal of the school.

“This crime is committed by those, who failed to understand the noble cause behind this institution. We are upset and hurt by this act of miscreants”, she said.

Sr Jasmine, a teacher said that this is for the fourth time the same statue was targeted by the miscreants in the 15 years of history of the institution.

The glass covering of the St Theresa's statue was targeted twice in 2007 and once again in 2009. After the last attack we had covered the statue with transparent fibre instead of glass. However, today they broke the fibre cell too”, she said.

Mangalore City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh, Crime Branch Inspector Venkatesh Prasanna and team conducted the spot investigation.

A complaint has been lodged at Kadri Police Station.
