MLA dreams of transforming Mangalore into Singapore!

Mangalore, October 23: Over a decade after then-chief minister S M Krishna's ardent dream of transforming the metropolitan city of Karnataka into 'Singapore', was subsided, a promising politician from coastal Karnataka has floated a new idea of converting Mangalore into Singapore.

The event was the 81st founder's day of the Vijaya Bank organised in Mangalore on Sunday. The Deputy Speaker of Karnataka Legislative Assemble N Yogish Bhat, who represents Mangalore South constituency, participating in the programme, stated that this coastal city can be made like Singapore, where natural features are retained.

Laying emphasis on potential of tourism in Dakshina Kannada district, of which Mangalore is the headquarters, he pointed out the need of infrastructural development and improving the transportation system, to achieve this goal.

Stating that he had a detailed discussion with the chief minister DV Sadanada Gowda, on how Dakshina Kannada could be developed into a model district, with specific roles for the government and the private sectors, the MLA expressed his desire to move ahead the builders, contractors and architects in developmental works.

Pointing out at the progress achieved by the district so far in the field of education and health, he said that this achievement would play its own role in Dakshina Kannada becoming an international tourism destination.

Tourism can also help people of the region develop economically, socially and educationally, he added.

New Delhi, Jul 28: Union Minister for Chemicals and Fertilizers Sadananda Gowda on Monday said that India has proved that it is the "pharmacy of the world" in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Speaking at a press conference here, Gowda said, "India is often referred to as 'the pharmacy of the world' and this has been proved true especially in the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic when India continued to export critical life-saving medicines to the countries."

Meanwhile, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Mansukh Mandviya said that three bulk drug parks will be developed in the country in partnership with the states at Rs 3,000 crores.

"Three bulk drug parks will be developed in the country in partnership with the states at Rs 3,000 crores. Four medical device parks will also be developed with a government grant of Rs 100 crores for one park," Mandaviya said.

Hubli, May 2: Around 1400 migrant workers from neighbouring districts, working at brick manufacturing factories in Hubli were sent to their respective districts on buses, amid coronavirus lockdown on Friday.

Dr Purushottam, Nodal Officer, COVID-19 task force said, "Total 1473 labourers from eight neighbouring districts, working in the brick manufacturing units of our district were sent by 74 buses. 876 labourers are from Kalburgi where we are sending 44 buses, 350 labourers are from Vijaypura where we are sending 27 buses."

He continued saying that 20 persons will be accommodated in a bus while maintaining social distancing.

"Before the labourers boarded, the buses were disinfected. NWKRTC officials took a special interest in doing so. The District Collector has written letters to the concerned DCs regarding shifting of labourers in every bus, one Nodal Officer will handover them to the local officials," Dr Purushottam added.

On Friday, the buses were sent to seven districts and one bus will be sent today.

Mangaluru, Jan 16: Following the widespread protests against the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), former minister and MLA UT Khader on Thursday urged the Centre and State government to address the concerns of the people.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, he said there is widespread confusion among the public with regard to the implementation of the Act. People are reluctant to open their doors to Asha workers, out of fear that the NRC exercise is being implemented, said Khader.

He urged the chief minister and home minister to gain the trust of the people on the CAA issue.
