Mangalore, October 26: As a sing of reformation in Hinduism, hundreds of Hindu widows on the auspicious occasion of Deepavali, received a rousing reception at Sri Gokarnatheshwara Temple at Kudroli, here.

The presence of widows, who were once considered to be a curse in the Hindu society, was the main feature of 'Chandrika Homa', 'Lakshmi Pooja' and 'Rathotsava' conducted at the Temple on Wednesday morning.

The ceremony was conducted under the leadership of former union minister B Janardhana Poojari for those widows who could not participate in a similar programme organised during recently concluded Mangalore Dasara.

On the same occasion Malathi Poojary, the wife of Janardhan Poojary took an oath along with other women to continue to participate in religious rituals even after death of their husbands.

After the rituals widows were served 'prasadam' comprising a saree, blouse, kumkum, jasmine flower and bangles.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Poojary, who is also the managing trustee of the Temple and the brain behind the idea, said that all these efforts are aimed at changing people's attitude towards widows.

“They should be treated as equals and should not be discriminated against”, he said.
