Mangalore, October 30: It takes a lot to be top dog here. You've got to have good genetics, good looks and a good attitude. Not all of them were pure bred, and others were a bit feisty during judging, but they were all special in the hearts of their owners at 'Dog Show' organised by Karavali Kennel Club at Kadri Park on Sunday, October 30.

More than 250 dog owners, including some from Hyderabad and Chennai, have brought their canines.

Categories ranged from small male/ female puppies to adult puppies and all the contenders had something special about them their owners wanted to share.

Dogs were judged for breed standard, body shape, coat, colour, temperament, movement and bite.

According to Club President T Subbaya Shetty breads like Doberman, Golden Retriever, Labrador, German shepherd, Rottweiler, Pug, Boxer, Saint Bernard, Mudhol Hound, Beagle, J R Terrier, Napoleon Mastiff, Shields, Pamorian dogs and other breeds took to the centre stage.

Mr. Shetty said that his club had applied for Kennel Club of India affiliation and it could take two years to get it. There could be over 1,000 canines in Mangalore with pedigree certificates. The next dog show was likely to be held in Udupi, he added.

The best dog in the show got the prize money of Rs. 30,000, second best Rs. 20,000 and the third Rs. 10,000. The best male and female puppies received Rs. 5,000 each. In addition, the best adults and puppies in each of the 25 breeds received certificates.

A facility was thrown open to those who want their dogs to get pedigree certificates from the Kennel Club of India (KCI). Pedigree certificate is necessary for participation in any dog show organised by KCI or its affiliates.

Udupi, May 17: A total of 1,460 migrant labourers left for Uttar Pradesh from Indrali Railway Station in Udupi in Shramik Special train on Sunday.

This is the first train to ferry migrant labourers from Udupi. As many as 236 from Karkala, 323 from Kundapura, 901 labourers from Brahmavar, Kaup and Udupi left for their native villages.

More than 2,000 labourers had gathered at the railway station and only 1,460 labourers received tickets to travel.

Those who did not receive tickets were disappointed and got into heated arguments with the officials.

The labourers were promised that they will receive tickets to another train, that would depart from Udupi before May 20. One bogie of the train was reserved for pregnant women, women and children.

As many as 1,712 from Jharkhand, 770 from Odisha, 977 from West Bengal, 1,600 from Bihar, 379 from Madhya Pradesh, 280 from Chattisgarh, 110 from Uttarkhand, 379 from Rajasthan had registered on Seva Sindhu portal.

Additional Deputy Commissioner B Sadashiva Prabhu said that there are plans to make arrangements to send migrant labourers from UP, Uttaranchal, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand.

Mangaluru, Jul 7: The residents of Bangle Gudde, Mathadagudde area in Gurupura Gram Panchayat in Dakshina Kannada district of Karnataka, where two teen aged children were buried alive, were shifted to safer places.

District officials said on Tuesday that the residents have been provided temporary shelter in Gurpur school, PU college, and hostels, while few others were shifted to Ashraya centers. Total 40 houses out of 180 houses in this area located in the red zone were damaged due to heavy rain.

If the residents want to stay in the rented house, the revenue department is ready to pay a sum of Rs 2,500 towards rent, official sources said.

Mangaluru/Udupi, Jun 7: Coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi have recorded 17 and 13 new coronavirus positive cases between 5 p.m. on June 6 and 5 p.m. on June 7. 

16 among 17 new covid patients in Dakshina Kannada are returnees from Maharashtra, while one returned from Goa recently.

Maharashtra returnees comprise 14 males, including three teenagers t, and two females aged 32 and 41. The Goa returnee is a 32-year-old male.

All of them have all been admitted to the designated COVID hospital in the district.

With this, the total tally of coronavirus cases in Dakshina Kannada has risen to 203, out of which 47 are currently active. As many as 150 patients have recovered and been discharged, and seven have died.

Among the 13 in Udupi, 12 are Maharashtra returnees, while process of contact tracing of one patient, a 30-year-old woman, is going on.

The patients comprise eight males, including a 7-year-old boy, and five females. They have all been admitted to the designated hospital.

This takes the total number of coronavirus cases in Udupi district to 902, out of which 798 are currently active, 103 discharged, and one patient has died.
