Mangalore, November 6: Festivity is in the air and malls and markets across the city are busy with people rushing for Eid-ul-Adha shopping.

People are busy shopping for new clothes, sweets and gifts and looking forward to spending the Eid holiday with their families and friends and relatives.

The sales are on, and long queues of people rushing to finish their Eid shopping are a common sight in prominent malls and shops. With families stocking up on outfits and groceries malls and super markets have become a bustle of activity and colour.

"Shopping is usually last minute for us," said Musthaq, a resident of Moodbidri who rushed to Mangalore on the eve of fest to by news dress along with his sister Ashura.

"Every year we prefer go for shopping on the eve of the fest, even though we know the markets and malls will be very crowded”, he said.

A time to bond

For Barkathunnisa, a BDS student, who hails from Venur, a remote village in Dakshina Kannada, Eid is a time to bond with family and friends. "Due to busy work schedules, we do not get to spend much time together with friends," she said.

"As my earning and learning brothers and sisters will get holidays at the same time, all of us will be together.

"We will also be visiting our friends and relatives."

While most people are rushing to make their last-minute buys, Masood, a 31-year-old Mangalorean, has comfortably ticked off all the items on his shopping list.

"I prefer to prepare for Eid long before the process of shopping becomes hectic," he said.

"Every Eid, I like to get my five-year-old daughter pretty dresses, and even my three-year-old son wears kurtha on this special occasion”

"My wife and I also place orders with our respective tailors for new kurthans and salwar well before Eid to ensure that the outfits are ready on time," he said.

New Delhi, Mar 19: The Supreme Court on Thursday upheld the validity of Karnataka's 2018 reservation law, which granted reservation in promotion to employees belonging to SC and ST categories.

A bench headed by Justice DY Chandrachud holds that applications filed by a group of general category employees for applying 'post-based quota' and the principle of the creamy layer at entry-level in public employment are not maintainable.

The apex court had, in November last year, reserved its order on the applications filed by general category candidates in the matter.

In May last year, the top court had upheld the law allowing reservations in promotions for SC and ST candidates with consequential seniority.

The Chief Minister had also discussed about the two issues yesterday and agreed to facilitate the pay hike, he added.
