Mangalore, November 5: Brushing aside the allegations of the role of Hindutva outfits in the desecration of St Alphonsa Catholic Church in the city, Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal on Saturday demanded a CoD probe to find out the truth behind the Thursday night's incident.

Addressing the media persons at VHP office here, Jagadish Shenava, vice-president of the city unit of VHP, lamented that there has been a conspiracy to tarnish the image of Hindutva organisations by holding them responsible for any kind of untoward incidents in Churches.

Referring to a local Kannada eveninger's report which claims that one of the sisters in the church had illicit relationship with the man who was arrested on charges of vandalizing the Church property, Mr Shenava said that the evninger's version seems to be truth.

“It is very unfortunate that there has been an effort to cover up the fact by blaming VHP and Bajrang Dal for this incident. The attitude of city police too arises suspicion as far as this case is concerned”, he said.

“We hereby demand the government to order a CoD probe to lay bare the truth behind this incident”, he reiterated.

Mr Shenava also demanded that the allegations of the illicit activity in Church proved true, police should not hesitate to take legal action against the concerned people.

He also said that M Shibu, the person accused in the incident of desecration of Church, was not a Hindu. “He was a converted Christian and also was a regular visitor to the same Church”, he said.

Mr Shenava said that he received a bad information from someone that Mangalore East Police have taken aVHP activist identified as Dinesh on Saturday into custody for questioning in connection with the same case. “I urge the police to find out the fact, instead of arresting innocent Hindus”, he said.

Manohar Tulajaram, President, VHP, Mangalore, and Gopal Kuttar, General Secretary were also present in the press meet.

Police Custody

Meanwhile, the second judicial magistrate first class court here on Saturday remanded Shibu to three days of police custody.

Bengaluru, Jan 15: Srishti Institute of Art, Design and Technology in Bengaluru has decided to remain shut for two days after a group of BJP workers wiped out graffiti on its outer walls claiming it as anti-Modi and allegedly warned them against any anti CAA agitation there.

According to sources, the group led by Yelahanka MLA S R Vishwanath allegedly even towed away some vehicles of students and faculty parked in front of the institute alleging that they were blocking the road and causing inconvenience to the local people.

Some students have alleged that they were threatened by BJP workers and also the institute's authorities regarding the graffiti and the blocking of the road using traffic police.

They even claimed that BJP workers warned them against organising any anti-NRC or CAA protests.

A few local residents are also said to have joined the BJP workers and raised complaints about the conduct of the institute's students.

According to local BJP workers, the MLA and a few party men had gone near the institute on receiving complaints from locals about vehicles parked there blocking the road, and when they came across the graffiti they painted it with saffron paint to avoid any controversy, and there was no altercation as being alleged.

However, there is no clarity on who drew the graffiti regarding Modi, which according to BJP workers allegedly depicted the PM in poor light.

The institute has declared holiday on Thursday and Friday to avoid any further escalation, keeping the interest and safety of students in mind, sources said.

Interestingly, on Tuesday graffiti had appeared overnight on the shutters of some shops and walls on the Church Street against Modi, CAA and NRC, following which the city police have launched an investigation.

The Rs 42 crore project was taken up by a joint venture between state, center and South Eastern railway. The contractor or the Engineer were not present when the incident occurred.

Blaming the contractor, the locals alleged that poor quality of work led to the incident. No contractor or engineer was present even during construction, they added.
