Cops nab illegal kerosene transportation team

Ullal, November 7: A team led by Mangalore Tahsildar caugt a team which was engaged in illegal transportation of kerosene meant for the distribution under public distribution system, to Kerala for higher rate at Manjanady in Konaje police station limits, on Sunday.

The team had waylaid a jeep which had cans and while cheking found that 140 litres of kerosene. When the officials informed Tahsildar of the incident, Tahsildar asked to get the jeep to Mangalore. Though the illegal transporters brought the jeep to Mangalore, there was only 45 litre kerosene in it.

Based on the complaint that rice and kerosene is being transported to Kerala, the team had carried out the operation. In fact, the BPL card holders had complained that they were getting only two litres of kerosene inspite of the government order that four litre kerosene should be supplied to the BPL card holders.

Surathkal police arrested four persons in connection with theft of diesel from Roro lagon from Surathkal railway station. The arrested are Ijaj (22), Pappu (22), Shameer (20) and Nisar (23).

The DCIB sleuths arrested three persons near Farangipet and seized 500 gms ganja worth Rs 15,000. The arrested have been identified as Deviprasad alias Pachu aliasPrashanth (25), Sangamesha (23) and Chennabasappa (22). In this connection, a case has been registered in Bantwal rural police station under NDPS Act 1985.

The police arrested six persons involved in gambling and seized Rs 1,080 and playing cards at Mottethadka Kemminje village in Puttur Taluk. The arrested are Haroon Rasheed, Abdul Kunhi, Antony Kutinha, Lohith Acharya, Isubu and Babu.

Bengaluru, Aug 4: Deputy Chief Minister Dr.CN Ashwathnarayan instructed the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner Manjunatha Prasad to set up a separate high-level committee to ascertain the exact cause of coronavirus-related deaths in the state.

He spoke to reporters after a meeting with Prasad on Tuesday.

"The committee, headed by senior officials will audit the reason for the increase in death cases. Has there been a death due to treatment delay? Or are there any shortcomings in the treatment process?" the deputy chief minister said.

He pointed out that based on the report, the committee should try to correct the deficiency and reduce the death rate.

"How many beds are in which hospital? How many patients are on a ventilator? How many have gone home from the hospital? Etc. All information needs to be updated online at the moment. He suggested that this information should be made available to the public online," Ashwaththanarayana said.

Stating that some hospitals are not giving details about the number of beds correctly, he instructed the commissioners to take legal action if differences in their data are found.

He said that there is a shortage of ASHA workers in the city and it needs to be hired immediately.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, there are 74,477 active COVID-19 cases in Karnataka and the death toll in the state is at 2,594.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: A 70-year-old woman who tested positive for COVID-19 got discharged from a hospital here on Sunday after she recovered from the novel coronavirus, said Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner, Sindu B Rupesh.

Seven other patients have also recovered and discharged in Dakshina Kannada till date. Total number of active cases in the district has decreased to 5 now.

As many as 232 COVID-19 positive cases have been reported in Karnataka till date.

The total number of coronavirus cases in India on Sunday climbed to 8447, including 764 cured and discharged, 1 migrated and 273 deaths, said the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Mangaluru, Jun 3: A banner that read "Veer Savarkar Flyover Pumpwell" surfaced on the sidewall of the Pumpwell flyover in Mangaluru on Tuesday night.

It is suspected that activists of Bajrang Dal put up the controversial banner. Though it was removed later, it sparked debates on social media and photos of it went viral.

The development comes amid the controversy over the naming of a flyover at Yelahanka in Bengaluru after Savarkar.

A Hindutva ideologue, Savarkar has tendered apology to British imperialists and pledged to support them following his arrest during India’s freedom movement.
