Mangalore, November 8: Over a hundred agitators were briefly detained by City police on Tuesday, when trade unions backed by various parties staged a demonstration in front of the head post office at Pandeshwar, here.
The demonstrators belonging to BMS, INTUC, AITUC, HMS, CITU and other trade unions were responding to their leaders call to nation-wide 'Jail Bharo' agitation.
Among the major demands of the demonstrators were roll-back of petro product price hikes, halt to disinvestment in Central and State enterprises, linkage of employment protection with the concessions or incentives offered to entrepreneurs, universal social security cover for the unorganised sector, compulsory registration of trade unions within 45 days etc.
Addressing the demonstrators ahead of the detention, B Madhava, secretary, district unit of CPI (M) charged that the Congress and the Bharatiya Janata Party were not concerned about issues including escalating prices.
