Lakshadweep-Mangalore ship service under threat

Mangalore, November 10: Mangalore has been and still a heaven and supply bastion for the islanders and Lakshadweep is not an exception. For a long time, the islanders have been trading profitably their goods mainly dry fish and copra and obtain many essentials and services to meet their basic needs from Mangalore.

Though the total charted islands number 24, there are nine submerged sand banks and coral reef in the Lakshadweep group. Eleven of the islands are permanently inhabited and the combined population in 2001 was put at 60,700 (now 64,429). The Island area roughly measures 32 sq. kms. The ethnic/racial feature of the inhabitants is predominantly Afro-Arabic with the islanders following Islam.

At a time when authorities concerned go out of the way to promote tourism, the island has become one of the leisure spots of the world.

The problem

Though the islanders prefer Mangalore than Kochi, the ship services from the Lakshadweep to Mangalore are under threat after the ship officials have reportedly expressed their concern over the safety of travel through estuary of Old Mangalore Port. The first passenger ship of the season carrying passengers has left the port on November 1 with 90 passengers but the authorities concerned are skeptical about their second voyage.

This ship service is connecting six islands in the Lakshadweep Islands. Lack of proper dredging to remove the sand and mud accumulated at estuary which connects the outer sea with the port has become a cause for concern. It appears that the delay in dredging would have a serious affect on the revenue of the port. If the path is not safe for travel, the Island administration will be forced to terminate the ship service to the main port or other ports.

According to the officials of ship, they are having difficulty to enter the old port due to the excess silt and sand accumulation at the estuary (the place where the Gurupur river meets the Arabian sea). If the water-level is not sufficient for ships to enter the Old Port (usually 11-13 ft required), the vessels would be damaged while entering the port. The only option then is to wait till the water-level goes up (high tides), which is nothing but waste of time and energy.

How it affects Islanders

Lakshadweep is a group of islands approximately 365 kms away from Mangalore. It is easier for people of many islands to travel to Mangalore than Cochin considering the time of travel and cost of goods. Many items like gold, clothes etc are relatively cheaper in Mangalore than Cochin.

At the same time, many islanders are depending on Mangalore for their health care, education and business needs. Last year, when the passenger service started for the first time, the cruisers to Lakshadweep were jam packed. This apart, tourists from mainland also use Mangalore to visit Lakshadweep, since the Mangalore- Lakshadweep sea route is rich with enchanting scenery - islands en route as well as the lagoons and corals under water.

Since a small region like Lakshadweep cannot support industries, the island government is actively promoting tourism as a means of their income. Besides affecting the tourism revenue in the island (if the services are stopped), the revenue of the Old Port too will be hit as 98 per cent of Old Port's loading and unloading is done by ships from the island.

Official speaks

Speaking to City Herald, Port Conservator Madusudan said that the proposal of Rs 4.6 crore for dredging has been submitted to the Government. “We are waiting for the sanction from the Government. Once it is sanctioned, we will call the tender for dredging,” he said. “Old port is a natural port. So the phenomenon of accumulating sand and mud is common.

At the same time, he also said that the cruisers carrying passengers will not have much problem, when compared with cargo vessels. “Passenger ships can sail if 10 feet water level is available. When it comes to cargos, it requires 13-14 feet which is not very often available,” he pointed out.

Since we are in mainland, we do not understand the problems of islanders, who are cut off from the mainland. But still it is not a proud thing to say that we are responsible for such a situation in a place which was once a part of South Canara.

Historical relation with DK

The Amindivi group of islands (Amini, Kadmat, Kiltan, Chetlat and Bitra) came under the rule of Tipu Sultan in 1787. They passed to British control after the Third Anglo-Mysore War and were attached to South Canara. The rest of the islands came under the suzerainty of the Arakkal family of in return for a payment of annual tribute. The British took over the administration of those islands for non-payment of arrears. These islands were attached to the Malabar district of the Madras Presidency during the British Raj.

Lakshadweep

Lakshadweep is an archipelago of twelve atolls, three reefs and five submerged banks, with a total of about thirty-nine islands and islets. The Amindivi group islands (consisting of Amini, Keltan, Chetlat, Kadamat, Bitra and Peremul Par) and the Lakshadweep group islands (comprising mainly Androth, Kalpeni, Kavaratti, Pitti and Suheli Par), both have a submarine connection between them, together with the Minicoy Island form the Coral Islands of India in the Arabian Sea. All these islands have been built up by corals and have fringing coral reefs very close to their shores. Lakshadweep is the smallest Union Territory of India. The capital is Kavaratti and the land area is 32 square kilometers. Only 10 islands have inhabitants.

Bengaluru, Jul 20: Janata Dal (Secular) leader HD Kumaraswamy has urged the Karnataka government to stop putting warning signboards in front of COVID-19 patients' houses alleging that they are leading to "social discrimination and untouchability" in the present times.

"A local government warning signboards in front of the homes of COVID-19 infected people is leading to neo-social discrimination and untouchability in the new age. Even after infection, the individual and family should live with dignity. The government should immediately stop the practice of placing signboards," Kumaraswamy's first tweet read.

"Instead of placing them in front of their homes and creating untouchability, send health workers to their homes to create courage and awareness. They should be told not to leave the house. There is no such degrading practice left behind. I would like to ask Chief Minister Karnataka BS Yediyurappa to pay attention to this," he added.

The former chief minister further said that threatening to cancel the licenses of medical colleges for refusing treatment to patients would not solve the problem and urged the government to take them into confidence instead of rebuking them.

"Refusing treatment is the fault of any hospital. But for the same reason, threatening to cancel government medical college licenses is not right. There is no profit in this emergency of health. MCI also has the power to revoke the licenses of medical colleges. Remember not the government," he said.

"In this case, the government should look to the Medical Colleges to get their services in order to get them to trust them instead of getting angry. Let them focus on meeting their needs. I insist on a collective fight against the coronavirus through this," he further added.

The COVID-19 count in Karnataka reached 63,772 on Sunday, including 39,370 active cases and 23,065 cured and discharged patients.

Bengaluru, May 3: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa requested his Maharashtra counterpart Uddhav Thackeray to release six TMC water from his state's reservoirs to rivers in Karnataka to meet acute drinking water shortage in North Karnataka.

Yediyurappa pointed out that the North Karnataka districts, namely Belagavi, Vijayapura, Bagalkot, Kalaburagi, Yadagiri and Raichur are facing acute shortage of drinking water due to onset of summer during early days of March this year.

"I request you to kindly direct the concerned authorities to release 3 TMC of water from Warna/Koyna reservoirs to Krishna river and 3 TMC of water from Ujjaini reservoir to Bhima river on humanitarian grounds for drinking purpose," Yediyurappa said in his letter.

He reminded Thackeray that even in the past the Maharashtra government had released water from its reservoirs to meet the drinking water needs of both human beings and livestock in drought-affected areas of Karnataka.

New Delhi, Feb 1: An extremist today fired shots at anti-CAA protesters at Shaheen Bagh in Delhi, just three days after another extremist fired at protesters at nearby Jamia Millia University. This is the second daylight shooting in which the police caught the man only after the shots were fired.

The man, apparently a fan of BJP leaders including Narendra Modi and Amit Shah, shouted "Jai Sri Ram" as he fired shots standing near police barricades put up at the south Delhi locality where hundreds of women and children have sat on the road in protest for more than a month. He was caught by the police. No one was injured. 

The shooter was also heard saying: "Humare desh mein sirf Hinduon ki chalegi aur kisi ki nahi (in our country only Hindus will prevail)." He had allegedly come to the area in an auto.

A witness said the man fired two-three times, standing right next to the police, not at the spot of the protest but close enough to a large crowd of unarmed men, women and children. 

"We suddenly heard gunshots. This person was shouting Jai Shri Ram. He had a semi-automatic pistol and he fired two rounds. The police were standing just behind him," said the witness, a volunteer at the protest.

"When his gun jammed, he ran. He tried to fire again, then tossed the gun into the bushes and tried to escape. Some of us and the police caught him, the police dragged him away," he added. Protesters questioned whether the police were more focused on keeping an eye on them rather than tackling crimes like this.

Police officer Chinmay Biswal said the man had fired shots in the air. "The man had resorted to aerial firing. Police immediately overpowered and caught him," he said.

This incident - the second shooting in Delhi at an anti-CAA protest -- has chilling similarities to the one that took place just two km away at Jamia university on Thursday, when a 17-year-old Class 12 boy from Uttar Pradesh fired a crude pistol at unarmed protesters with dozens of policemen behind him, watching. The teen, who left home claiming he was going to school, took a bus to Delhi intending to target Shaheen Bagh but landed at Jamia next-door after an auto-driver dropped him off there to avoid the traffic chaos.

The shootings have taken place in quick succession after controversial slogans of "Goli Maaro Sa***n Ko (shoot the traitors)" were chanted on Monday at a Delhi campaign rally of Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister of State for Finance, who was part of the team involved in Budget 2020 announced today.

Mr Thakur was banned from campaigning in Delhi for three days for egging on BJP workers to shout the "Goli Maaro" slogan.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal slammed Home Minister Amit Shah, to whose ministry the Delhi Police reports to, over the two shooting incidents. "What have you done to our Delhi, Amit Shah ji? Bullets are being fired in broad daylight... Law and order is being criticised constantly. Elections will come and go, politics will keep happening, but for the sake of the people of Delhi, please focus on fixing law and order," he tweeted.

The Shaheen Bagh protest has attracted attention from across the country in the protests against the CAA or the Citizenship (Amendment) Act, which makes religion a criterion for citizenship. Critics say the law discriminates against Muslims as only non-Muslims from neighbouring Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh can become Indian citizens if they fled religious persecution and entered India before 2015.

Of late, critics of the Shaheen Bagh protests, mainly pro-CAA activists, have attacked the month-long sit-in on a key road in Delhi connecting to Noida. They say the protest has become a traffic nightmare for commuters.
