Mangalore University plans grand Kanaka Jayanti on Nov 17

Mangalore, November 11: The Kanaka Dasa Chair in Mangalore University will be organising Kanaka Dasa Keertane on November 17 to mark the 524th birth anniversary of Kanaka Dasa.

Co-ordinator of the programme Dr B Shivram Shetty said, as part of the programme, it has planned to have song recitals and seminars related to the life and times of the great poet.

A book on Kanaka edited in the year 1918 by Pavanje Guru Rao has been re-printed. It will be released on the same occasion, he said.

As a step forward since last year, the University has included participation of the Pre-University colleges as well in the celebration

The inauguration of the public programme will be held at Town Hall in the city, since it is convenient for the public to visit the University campus.

The programme will be inaugurated at 10:30 am. Prof Kalegowda Nagavara will inaugurate the function. Deputy Commissioner N S Chennappa Gowda will be the chief guest.

The Vice Chancellor Prof T C Shivashankara Murthy will preside over the function.

The NSS wing of Mangalore University, Dakshina Kannada Sahitya Parishath, Badriya Junior College and Rosario Junior College will be part of this programme.

Kasaragod, Jun 10: Indian Union Muslim League leader Metro Muhammad Haji passed away at a private hospital in Kozhikode today. He was 70.

He was a well known social and political activist in Kasaragod district. He has served in the social, cultural, philanthropic and educational fields.

He was the Executive Committee Member of the Muslim League. He also served as the Kerala State Vice President of the Sunni Youth Union, and President of the Kanhangad Samyukta Jamaat.

He is survived by his wife Zuhra and children Mujeeb, Jaleel, Shameem, Khaleel, Kabeer, Suhaila and Jusaila.

Bengaluru, May 5: The Karnataka government is planning to maintain a Health database of its citizens in the backdrop of experience gained from the COVID-19 pandemic, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said on Tuesday.

In a statement issued here, he said a “Health Register” will be maintained to keep track of all health issues of the people and the project will be implemented first in Chikkaballapur district on an experimental basis.

“COVID-19 has provided enough experience for all of us and therefore, there is a need to maintain health data of each person. The government will be undertaking a survey using a team of Primary Health Centre officials, Revenue officials, Education department staff and Asha Workers,” the Minister said in a release here.

Kalaburagi, Mar 16: In the wake of coronavirus scare, the public gatherings including local markets, village fairs, Urs festival in Kalaburagi district have been banned, said B Sharat, Deputy Commissioner, on Sunday.

"Gatherings including local markets, village fairs, Urs festival in the district have been banned as a precautionary measure against the coronavirus until further orders," Sharat said.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that Europe has become the new 'epicenter' of the global coronavirus pandemic that has infected more than 15 lakh people with over 4,000 deaths globally.
