Father, daughter crushed to death by lorry

Mangalore, November 12: A college girl and her father were killed in a horrific road crash involving a Honda Activa and a lorry near Yekkur Gorigudda in the city on Saturday morning.

The victims are Ramesh Alape (40), who was riding the ill-fated Honda Activa, and his 18-year-old daughter Sushmitha, who was riding pillion.

While Sushmitha, a second-semester B A student in St Agnes College, Mangalore, died on spot after being crushed under the wheels of lorry, her father succumbed to his injuries at a private hospital in city.

The speeding lorry knocked down the Honda Activa, in which the victims were travelling, at around 8:00 am, when the vehicular movement on the road was very less.

It is learnt that Ramesh was supposed to drop her daughter to an MCC camp, where other students were waiting for her in the morning.

According to local sources, rash driving by the driver of the lorry bearing registration number KA 19 U 8740 was the reason behind the accident.

Mangaluru, Jun 16: Dakshina Kannada today reported 79 fresh covid-19 cases, taking the total infections in the coastal district to 370.

Out of the 79 positive cases, 75 persons had returned from Saudi Arabia. All of them have been shifted to the designated COVID hospital in Mangaluru for treatment.

As many as 11 persons today discharged from the hospital taking the total number of discharges to 145. There are 217 active cases in the district. 

Udupi district today reported 7 new covid cases taking the total to 1035. Among them 817 have discharged from the hospitals including today’s 81. The number of active cases is 217.

New Delhi, Feb 24: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is conducting raids at more than 20 locations in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The latest raids are being carried out in connection with ISIS conspiracy cases.

More details are currently awaited regarding the cases.

Meanwhile, NIA had on February 15 filed a charge sheet against two Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terrorists before the agency special court, Jammu. The two terrorists are identified as Khalil Ahmad Kayani (34) and Mohammad Nazeem (23), both residents of Haveli Farwad Kahuta district in Pakistan occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The case is related to the arrest of the two accused near Nilkanth Nala, approximately 700 metres inside the Indian side of LoC, in Gulmarg Sector of Baramulla district.

Bengaluru, May 5: The Karnataka government is planning to maintain a Health database of its citizens in the backdrop of experience gained from the COVID-19 pandemic, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said on Tuesday.

In a statement issued here, he said a “Health Register” will be maintained to keep track of all health issues of the people and the project will be implemented first in Chikkaballapur district on an experimental basis.

“COVID-19 has provided enough experience for all of us and therefore, there is a need to maintain health data of each person. The government will be undertaking a survey using a team of Primary Health Centre officials, Revenue officials, Education department staff and Asha Workers,” the Minister said in a release here.
