Philatelic exhibition dedicated to children

Mangalore, November 14: History was seen in the form of a stamp when the image of a boy eating a banana was displayed at the Dakshina Kannada Philatelic and Numismatics Association (DKPNA) exhibition at Head Post Office in Pandeshwar on Sunday.

DKPNA member Dr Rathish Udupa exhibited stamps, postal covers, cards and first day covers. Explaining the idea behind the stamp, Dr Rathish informed that 8 year old Shekar Borker was selected by Jawaharlal Nehru, and the stamp was issued in the interest of good nutrition for children. Interestingly the boy in the photo is now 62 years old and promotes philately after he retired from a company in New Delhi.

A total of 15 sheets of stamps, first day covers and postal covers from his collection all his stamps marked children's day. Jawaharlal Nehru with a child, children's drawings and others attracted the crowd. DKPNA member Jayaprakash displayed coins released by Kings of Karnataka Origin, to mark Rajyothsava.

Other coins on display were from the rule of Alupa Kings( 650-1335 AD, Hyder Ali( 1761-1782), Divan Purnayya( 1799-1810), Tippu Sultan(1782-1799) and Krishnaraja Wadiyar ( 1810-1868). Jayaprakash added that all the Kings brought out coins in Gold, Silver and Copper.

Bengaluru, Jun 3: The Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences at Hubballi has successfully treated a COVID-19 patient through plasma therapy, state medical education minister K Sudhakar said today.

"Karnataka achieves yet another milestone in battle against #COVID19. KIMS Hubli has successfully treated a Covid19 patient through Plasma Therapy & is the first institute in the state to accomplish this. Congrats to KIMS doctors & staff for this feat!" Mr Sudhakar tweeted.

In plasma therapy treatment, plasma cells from a COVID-19 patient, who has recovered from the disease, is transfused to a coronavirus patient who is in critical condition to treat him.

Plasma therapy was effectively used in the past during Ebola and the Spanish flu pandemic.

Bengaluru, Jun 4: The Special Investment Promotion Task Force, constituted by the Karnataka government, held its first meeting in Vidhana Soudha, Bengaluru on Wednesday, June 3.

The first meeting of the task force was held under the chairmanship of Chief Secretary, Karnataka government.

The body is seeking to find ways to attract the disenchanted multi-national corporations (MNCs) which are looking to shift their manufacturing base away from China in the back-drop of the COVID-19 outbreak.

Belagavi, Mar 7: Karnataka Urban Development Minister B A Basavaraj on Saturday said that government would a take decision very soon regarding conducting city corporations election in the state.

Speaking with the media after review meeting at Belagavi city corporation (BCC) here he further said that delimitation exercise of the wards has to be done followed by reservations.

The minister stated that discussions would be held with Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa and would arrive at a decision to conduct the election in about a month’s time.
