Nine is mine' campaigners get a rousing reception in city

Mangalore, November 17: Nine children of 'Nine is mine' campaign traveling to New Delhi received a rousing reception when by the Kochuveli-Amristar train stopped at Mangalore Railway Station on Wednesday.

As soon as the train pulled into the station at 8:30 pm, students from Roshini Nilaya School of Social Work, members from Child Welfare Committee, Child Labour Department began shouting slogans urging the centre to stick to its promise on allocating nine per cent of GDP for education and health.

Child Welfare Committee (CWC) chairperson Asha Nayak was also present at the station to greet the students.

Nine children accompanied by five staffers from Don Bosco National Forum were felicitated on the platform.

The spokesperson of 'Nine is mine' national campaign, Joseph Thomas, said that the train yatra is the fourth phase of a campaign launched to make sure the centre keeps to its promise.

Prior to this about four lakh signatures were collected by the Don Bosco National Forum for the young at risk (YAR forum) on November 13, 2006.

This was in the backdrop of the government going back on its promise to allocate six per cent of GDP for education and three per cent of GDP on health. In the second phase, public views were elicited through surveys and a cycle yatra from Chandigarh to New Delhi marked the third phase.

The fourth phase included nine children traveling from Shillong, Cape Comorin, Kashmir, Trivandrum to reach New Delhi on November 20.

Those involved in the campaign included Daniel, Sriram, Veeru from Tamil Nadu, Vikas,Kiran, Ajith from Kerala and Sangamesh ,Abhisurya from Karnataka .

WC Chairperson Asha Nayak expressed happiness about children taking part in this awareness campaign.

School of social Work Roshini Nilaya principal Sophia Fernandes also spoke. The presence of nine children from CARDTS provided support to HIV positive children. The children sang 'Hum Honge Kamiyab yek din'.

Bengaluru, May 14: Reformed underworld don Muthappa Rai, who was battling cancer for the past year, was said to be in a critical condition at Manipal Hospital in Bengaluru, late Wednesday night. Doctors said he was on life-support at the time of going to press. Rai (68), realtor, entrepreneur and founder of pro-Kannada organisation Jaya Karnataka, had retired from public life after he was diagnosed with cancer. He was part of an ongoing investigation into gangster Ravi Pujari, who was extradited from Senegal recently.

Born in Puttur into a Bunt family, he started out as a bank employee in Bengaluru, and later ran a live band restaurant. In 1994, he was shot in a Bengaluru court by a man dressed as a lawyer, after which he was bedridden for a couple of years.

Rai Moved to Dubai in 1996. He was deported from the UAE to India in 2002, and was arrested in Bengaluru when HT Sangliana was the police commissioner. Both Rai and Pujari had allegedly been associated with underworld don Dawood Ibrahim.

Mangaluru, Jul 10: Among over a hundred special flights to be operated between India and United Arab Emirates under the fourth phase of Vande Bharat Mission, five flights will be operated from Mangaluru International Airport.

The repatriation flights are also allowed to carry eligible passengers from India to UAE between July 12 and July 26.

These flights will be allowed to carry the ICA approved UAE residents on their onward journey from India to the Gulf country.

According to Air India, while flying from India to UAE, these special flights will carry only those passengers who are destined for the UAE.

Flights from Mangaluru

From Mangaluru, the first special flight will take off on July 13 at 7.30 am and reach Sharjah at 9.30 am.

The second flight is scheduled to take off on July 16 at 9.30 am and reach Dubai airport at 11.20 am.

The third flight will take off on July 19 at 11.00 am and land at Sharjah airport at 1.00 pm.

The fourth flight will take off on July 20 at 7.30 am and reach Sharjah at 9.30 am.

The fifth flight will take off on July 26 at 8.00 am and land at Abu Dhabi Airport at 10.20 am.

Mangaluru, Apr 12: Dakshina Kannada district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary on Saturday, April 11, welcomed the State government’s decision to permit fishing during the lockdown that’s now extended till April 30.

“We welcome the Centre’s decision to permit fishing during the lockdown. This directive comes as a huge relief for the fishing community,” Poojary told newsmen here.

Poojary informed that 14,000 boats will be deployed for fishing. Keeping the need for social distancing in mind only five crew members will be allowed on a boat. The boats can set sail in the morning and should return by evening.
