Indira Gandhi's 94th birth anniversary: District Congress pays tributes to Iron Lady

Mangalore, November 19: The Dakshina Kannada District Congress Committee remembered former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her 94th birth anniversary.

DCC president and Bantwal MLA B Ramanath Rai led the floral tribute to the portrait of the Iron Lady at District Congress Office in the city.

Local Congress KS Mohammad Masood, TK Sudhir and Ibrahim Kodijal were among those present.

Gandhi, born on November 19, 1917 in the politically influential Nehru family, was the first woman Prime Minister of India. Her father Jawaharlal Nehru was a pivotal figure in the Indian independence movement and the first Prime Minister of independent India.

After Nehru's death in 1964, she became a Rajya Sabha member and was inducted in Lal Bahadur Shastri's cabinet as Minister of Information and Broadcasting.

She held three consecutive terms as Prime Minister from 1966 to 1977. The Congress leader was assassinated on October 31, 1984.

Mangaluru, Apr 14: Karnataka Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa today wished the people of Tulu Nad a Happy Bishu in Tulu language.

Yediyurappa took to Twitter on Tuesday and wrote in Tulu, 'Happy Vishu to everyone! A new year brings new hope and new energy. May the coming year bring good health and well-being in everyone’s lives.'

Bishu – the traditional New Year for the Hindus in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, which begins from Tuesday is believed to signal the arrival of good luck and fortune for the coming year.

Mangaluru, Jul 8: A seven-day-old baby from Kallapu near Permannur village, within Ullal town limits in Mangaluru taluk has tested positive for COVID-19.

The baby’s mother, while pregnant, was admitted to a private hospital in the town on June 30. 

Her samples, which were sent for testing before delivery, reported positive, doctor said.

On Wednesday, the baby’s tests too reported positive for COVID-19.

Bengaluru, May 5: The Karnataka government is planning to maintain a Health database of its citizens in the backdrop of experience gained from the COVID-19 pandemic, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar said on Tuesday.

In a statement issued here, he said a “Health Register” will be maintained to keep track of all health issues of the people and the project will be implemented first in Chikkaballapur district on an experimental basis.

“COVID-19 has provided enough experience for all of us and therefore, there is a need to maintain health data of each person. The government will be undertaking a survey using a team of Primary Health Centre officials, Revenue officials, Education department staff and Asha Workers,” the Minister said in a release here.
