State level Net Ball tourney inaugurated at Sacred Hearts' High School

Mangalore, November 19: A State-level Netball tournament for high school boys and girls was inaugurated on the premises of Sacred Hearts' High School at Kulshekar on Saturday, November 19.

The tournament is being organised under the joint auspicious of the Department of Public Instruction, Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Sacred Heart High School.

The function started with the march past by the students, who came from 18 different districts including Haveri, Kolar, Bangalore South, Bangalore North, Davanagere, Bellary, Belgaum, Chitradurga, Hassan, Udupi, and Dakshina Kannada took part in the march past.

The stage programme was formally inaugurated by N Yogish Bhat, Deputy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly, by lighting the lamp, while Rev Fr Valerian Pinto threw the ball to the net to inaugurate the tournament.

Addressing the gathering Mr Bhat said apart from the State Government organisations too should provide students an opportunity to exhibit their talents by conducing sports meets.

The march past was inaugurated by Rev Sr Mary Lita of Bethany Institution, Flag was hoisted by Praveen Kumar, Mayor, Mangalore City Corporation.

Mayor Praveen said that Rs 1 lakh has been donated by the MCC for the sports meet to encourage the sports spirit among the young children.

Rev Fr R P Arora, Kulshekar Church felicitated the three students from Sacred High school who contested at the national level sports meet.

The tournament was conducted for boys and girls section in the under-14 and under-17 age-group categories. More than 30 teams from across the state with over 950 participants are participating in the two-day tournament.

Channappa Gowda, Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada, Dayavathi, Block Education Officer, Mangalore, Mariyamma Thomas, Corporater, Shailaja Bhat, President of DK Zilla Panchayat, were present as a chief guests on the occasion. M N Nayak delivered the introductory remarks.

Mangaluru, Feb 10: Sandeep Malani has been of lately winning back to back awards at various events and film festivals. Being an actor, he has won 3 Best Actor awards (2 for his gripping performance in the Kannada feature film, Mookavismitha, directed by Gurudutt Sreekanth and one award for his multi faceted performance in the short film, Nishyabda Nishi directed by his son Silver). These awards were honored at the Indian Cine Film Festival in Mumbai and Karunadu Kannada Rathna Award in Bengaluru.

He also won an award for his woman empowerment film, Sulige Sikkidaaga in Pune, while his musical documentary on Sridevi titled SrideviBaaz won him two awards at Pune and Kolhapur International film festivals. His other short film on transgender Mamta (Maternal Love) won the Audience Awards in USA.

Very recently he was honored by the Filmaholic Foundation in Bengaluru for being a successful short film maker with two Kannada films Jo Jo Laali and Sulige Sikkidaaga, both featuring award winning actress Kalpana Pandit, winning multiple awards and making news at International Film Festivals. This honor was given at the Karnataka Youth International Short Film Festival.

With donning so many feathers of awards in his hat, he recently bagged the most prestigious one; that being receiving the Award for Best Feature Film shot on Mobile for his film ‘Maa – Yeh CineMaa Hai’ shot on iPhone at the 1st ever IMFF India (International Mobile Film Festival India 2020) held at World Trade Center, Mumbai on 8th February.

With a whole lot short films in the category and barely few feature films in the Feature Film Category, Malani verged out to be the winner as his Hindi film was a complete family entertainer that of 5 songs, sentiment value, and a wholesome entertainer with 100 artists working in the film that consists of stage and television actors, newcomers, models and common people. The film starred Sandeep’s family members playing important roles. His mother, Meena Malani (playing the title role), wife Reshma Malani (playing one of the lead actress) and son Silver Malani (playing an important character). The cast includes Mahesh Dulam, Anita Dulam, Ranjeet Jha, Bharath Lakshmikanth, Mahendra Pandey, Vishal Digani, Akash Hora, Shuba Raksha, Sanjukta Ghosh, Sharanya Kaur, Varsha Acharya, Kkewal Sharma, Anant Joshi, Vivek Punjabi, Valerian Menezes, Nigel Pereira. Veteran actresses Sarojini Shetty, Deepali Khambadkone, Vinny Fernandes also features in the film while Kalpana Pandit, Sudha Chandran, Sonal Monteiro, Adaa Khan and others give a social message on mother, womanhood and empowerment.  The film has been jointly produced by RKJ Film Productions, The Studio Agency and Malani Talkies.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: Several state Congress leaders, including its President D K Shivakumar, among others, were detained by police as they tried to march towards Raj Bhavan here against the alleged attempts by BJP to topple the party's government in Rajasthan.

Shivakumar, along with Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah, state Congress Working President Eshwar Khandre, Salim Ahmed among others were stopped by the police midway as they marched from KPCC office towards Raj Bhavan.

Congress leaders then staged a dharna at the place where they were stopped. Addressing the gathering, Shivakumar accused the BJP of trying to "murder" democracy by destabilizing and removing elected governments.

"We wanted to protest against it and submit a memorandum to the President through the Governor," but the Karnataka government by using police was not letting them proceed towards Raj Bhavan, he said. "Despite our being a peaceful protest, the police stopped us," he said.

Siddaramaiah, echoing similar views, said peaceful protests against injustice was the right of every citizen. Alleging that the BJP was attempting to destabilise and remove the elected government in Rajasthan as it did in Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh, he said the Governor's office there (Rajasthan) was being 'misused'.

The Governor was working like an agent of the central government, he charged. He said, despite repeated appeals by the Rajasthan cabinet, the Governor there had not convened the assembly session, for the floor test to take place and for Congress to prove its majority. Police subsequently detained Shivakumar and some other Congress leaders and took them to a nearby police station.

They were later released. Meanwhile, as the Congress' protest amid Covid19 pandemic did not follow social distancing norms, Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar hit out at that party's leaders. In a tweet Sudhakar said, for Congress leaders getting publicity was more important than social concerns.

Mangaluru, July 1: The district administration has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in entire Dakshina Kannada between 8pm and 5am in the entire month of July.

Notice in this regard was issued today by Deputy Commissioner Sindhu B Roopesh. The order will come into force with immediate and will be in place ill July 31, the DC said.

The decision was taken days after Karnataka government took steps to tighten covid restriction and imposed lockdown from 8pm to 5am. 

Under the imposed Section 144, the presence or movement of one or more persons in public places are prohibited. Besides, the gathering of any sort anywhere, including religious places subject to certain conditions in view of the COVID-19 pandemic will also be restricted.
