Sports groups get kits from administration

Mangalore, November 22: DK district is not short of talented youth but many a time there is lack of opportunity, support and equipment. There are many youth groups who struggle to translate their dreams into reality. The government is trying its level best to support these youth groups by providing them facilities they require, said District in-charge Minister Krishna J Palemar after distributing sports kits to different youth groups in the district at Zilla Panchayat Hall on Monday.

The programme was organised by District Administration in association with Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat and Youth Service and Sports Department.

Palemar said that the National Youth Convention will be held in Mangalore during the second week of January. As many as 6,000 youth from different parts of the country are expected to participate. There is a need to decorate the entire city to welcome the youth, he said.

Speaking on the occasion Karnataka Legislative Assembly Deputy Speaker N Yogish Bhat said that financial crunch is major problem faced by the aspiring athletes. The problem persists after participating in international level events. The district administrations, entrepreneurs, businessmen and various organisations should help these talented participants.

“Mangala stadium synthetic track tender has been approved. The work will start after the youth convention,” he said.Presiding over the programme Zilla Panchayat President K T Shailaja Bhat said that talent should not suffer due to the lack of facilities.

From every taluk 24 youth groups were selected to receive sports kits. As many as 120 youth groups from the district received sports paraphernalia such as volley ball, volley ball net, throw ball, chess boards, carom boards, skipping ropes and other items. A sum of Rs 5,000 was spent on each group.

Deputy Commissioner Dr N S Channappa Gowda, ZP CEO Dr K N Vijayprakash and others were present.

Kasaragod, Apr 30: The Kasaragod District Collector Sajith Babu, his gun man and driver has entered in quarantine on Wednesday.

According to sources, the Collector had been asked to go on quarantine after the reports of a journalist, who interviewed him, was tested positive for the virus.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan at his routine evening press conference revealed the positivity of the journalist.

Mangaluru, Jan 21: Operations at Mangaluru International Airport (MIA) are normal, a day after security agencies detonated a bomb recovered from the airport in a controlled explosion, an official said on Tuesday.

"All operations are normal at Mangluru International Airport. Everything is normal," told the airport director V.V. Rao to IANS.

Rao said even on Monday, there was no interruption to the airport operations, except for that one recalled IndiGo flight to Bengaluru.

"As the explosive was isolated and taken away from the airport, there was no disturbance to flights, except one Bengaluru-bound IndiGo flight which suffered a few hours delay and took off later," said Rao.

Meanwhile, security has been tightened at the airport.

Mangluru north assistant commissioner of police Belliappa told media that the police are still on the hunt for the culprits who planted the bomb at the airport.

"We are trying to trace the culprits, we got the footage of the suspects," said Belliappa, highlighting that the police are yet to find the name, age and other details of the suspects.

At Bengaluru's Kempegowda International Airport (KIA), the number of police personnel has been increased in a bid to tighten the security and 24 hour searching of vehicles is underway.

"We have set up two check posts on the way to the airport and randomly checking vehicles," told Devanahalli assistant commissioner of police Subramanya to media.

All Karnataka airports, including Hubballi and Belagavi, are on high alert.

Bhatkal, Mar 24: Two people, who arrived from Dubai at Mangaluru International Airport on March 21, were tested positive for coronavirus.

A 40-year-old man has been tested positive for the dreaded killer disease Covid-19 while 65-year-old man, who arrived on same day from Dubai, has also been tested positive for the virus. The person reportedly took train from Mangaluru to Bhatkal after arriving at Mangaluru International Airport.

Both of them hailed from Bhatkal and are currently hospitalised and their direct contacts are being traced by the authorities.
