Respect vehicles of god to show true devotion: Maneka Gandhi

Dharmasthala, November 24: Former union minister Maneka Gandhi said that all the Hindu gods and goddess have animals and birds depicted as their vehicle. We can express real devotion only when we show concern towards the animals and birds.

Speaking at the Lakshadeepotsava and 79th 'Sarva Dharma Sammelan' held at Sri Kshethra Dharmasthala on Wednesday, she said that people worship the gods with great deal of devotion but they fail to show even a bit of respect to the animals and birds depicted as vehicles to the gods.

“These animals and birds are ill-treated and even made to death without any sanctity attached it them,” she lamented.

“We revere Lord Krishna but the peacocks, vehicle of Lord Karthikeya are killed and peacock feathers are sold in market. We respect goddess Durga but at the same time we hunt Tigers to earn money selling its pelt,” she said.

ISRO former chairman Dr G Madhavan Nair said inspite of development in science and technology, the religious discourses are helpful for the welfare.

“I have spent my life in the field of science. I am not a follower of any one particular religion. I have understood earth, galaxy through science. Still there is a power which was responsible for Big Bang. We human beings have understood only five per cent of the world around us. The complexity of the universe makes us believe that God created the world,” Nair said.

“We start believing the God when special and weird happenings take place in life. Luck works out in life,” he said citing an example of Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).

“There was no technical fault in GSLV. However, luck was not our side. It failed. There was cyclone in Arabian sea when we were about to launch satellite from Sriharikota. Seeing this many of our scientists broke 100 coconuts and prayed to God. Later, we realised that the cyclone had changed its path. It may be accidental or the handwork of the God,” he said.

“All the religions propagate peace. There is a need to develop respect towards other religion for the well-being of the society,” he added.

Dharmadhikari D Veerendra Heggade was present. Bagalakote's Dr Bala Saheba Lokapura, Bijapur's Basheer Ahammed Umri and Prof Judith Pinto of Mangalore delivered lectures on the occasion. Maneka Gandhi and Madhavan Nair were felicitated on the occasion.

Evacuation flights from Muscat, Doha to Mangaluru via Bengaluru on May 20, May 22

Mangaluru, May 12: Air India will operate two flights - one each from Doha and Muscat - to bring back stranded Kannadigas from Qatar and Oman to Mangaluru next week.

The flight from Muscat to Mangaluru will be operated on May 20 via Bengaluru. It will depart from Muscat International Airport at 1.15 pm local time and reach Bengaluru at 6.15 pm. After the layover at Bengaluru airport, the flight will take off at 7.15 pm and land at Mangaluru International Airport at around 8.10 pm.

Doha – Bengaluru – Mangaluru flight is will be operated May 22. The flight will take off from Doha at 1.30 pm local time and will land at Bengaluru at 8 pm. It will take off from Bengaluru at 9 pm and land at Mangaluru airport around 9.35 pm.

Milk collection stopped in Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts

Mangaluru, Mar 29: Dakshina Kannada Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union Limited in a statement announced that their milk collection centres across Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts will be closed on March 29 and 30.

Due to a shortage of storage space with them, the Union has decided to stop collecting milk on these two days, according to the statement issued here on Saturday.

The sale/retail of milk and milk products won’t be affected in these two days.

LPG penetration 100% in Karnataka, claims IOC official

Bengaluru, Feb 28: The Liquefied Petroleum Gas penetration in Karnataka is 'absolutely 100 per cent' due to the Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana, Indian Oil Corporation Karnataka Executive Director D L Pramodh said here on Friday.

In 2014, LPG penetration in the State was only 68 per cent, but after the PMUY, massive number of gas connections were given in the last five years, he said, adding, "It is absolutely 100 per cent today."

"There are 1.6 crore LPG connections out of which around 31.5 lakh -- or around 20 per cent -- come under the PMUY. The 100 per cent LPG penetration in the state will help women in rural areas to make their kitchens smokeless. Against the national average of 2.88 cylinders per family per PMUY annually, the figure is Karnataka 3.4 cylinders in Karnataka," Pramodh told reporters.

On the initiative of blending ethanol with petrol, he said it's 8.6 per cent in Karnataka, the highest comparedto other states, where it's five per cent to 5.5 per cent. The state aims to increase it to 10 per cent. By March 31, the IOC would commission the Rs 10 crore Vapour Recovery System at the Devanagonthi terminal on the city outskirts which would ensure that vapour does not go out in the air when tankers are being filled with fuel. "This is an important measure taken tominimise pollution", he said.

Pramodh also said the IOC has started mobile fuel dispensers, delivering fuels at the doorsteps.

Regarding the IOC's preparedness for Electric Vehicle charging stations, Pramodh said the Ministry of Power has given the company a target to set up 500 charging stations across India in the first phase. The IOC has already signed MoUs with NTPC, Power Grid Corporation Limited, Hyundai Motors, Tech Mahindra and Tata Power in this regard.

In Karnataka, 58 sites have been identified for setting up charging and battery swapping stations.

"Total electric vehicle charging facilities planned by IOC in Karnataka by March 31 is 34, out of which 26 will be EVcharging sites and eight battery swapping stations," Pramodh said.
