PUCL urges Governor to sanction prosecution of BSY, Acharya for 'defending violence against minorities'

Mangalore, November 24: People's Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL) has urged governor H R Bhardwaj to accord sanction for the prosecution of former chief minister B S Yeddyurappa, former home minister V S Acharya, and three senior police officers.

PUCL's demand for action is based on what it says is "complicity of Yeddyurappa and Acharya in instigating, encouraging and defending acts of violence against the minorities", leading to repeat of such instances.

PUCL, in a letter to the governor and released to the media here on Wednesday, stated that apart from indulging in corrupt acts, Yeddyurappa and Acharya are liable to be prosecuted for inciting communal violence, injuries to scores of persons, damage to property belonging to minorities and for shielding guilty officers.

The non-action has resulted in recurrence of church attacks and there have been three such incidents in the city in the last month.A People's Tribunal Inquiry, set up under former judge of state High Court M F Saldanha, held an impartial and incisive inquiry into these incidents and to identify the persons responsible for the attacks on Christian prayer halls across Karnataka in general and Dakshina Kannada district in particular during September 2008.

"Saldanha's report clearly holds the state government responsible for atrocities in question," PUCL noted in the letter.The violent incidents in the city, though attributed to pro-Hindu outfits, were committed by state machinery - police and administrative officers. "There is unimpeachable evidence as far as this is concerned and three names stand out - Sathish Kumar, then Superintendent of Police of Dakshina Kannada, Jayanth Shetty, then Circle Police Inspector (now DySP) and M K Ganapathy, Police Inspector.

It is in public interest that action be ordered against these five persons which will also have the necessary deterrent effect. PUCL urged the governor to direct the DGP to order the requisite investigation and to proceed according to Law.PUCL appreciated the firmness with which the governor has dealt with cases of corruption.

Mangaluru, June 6: Four persons were arrested by the Mulki police today in connection with the murder of Abdul Lateef, a 38-year-old businessman.

The arrested are: Mohammed Hasim (27), Nissar alias Riyaz (33), and Mohammed Razim (24), all residents of Mulki, and Aboobakar Siddique (27), a resident of Udupi.

The weapons and vehicles used for murder have been confiscated. Investigation is in progress to find out the motive behind the murder and the arrest of remaining accused.

Abdul Lateef, his father-in-law Muneer, latter’s son Ijaz and relative Imran were returning from Vijaya Bank at Mulki when a gang of nine miscreants waylaid their car and attacked with sharp weapons.

The gang comprised of Hakeem, Wafa, Asim, Siddique, Nissar, Bava, Farhan, Razeem and Siddiq.  While four of them are arrested, police continued hunt to nab other accused.

Abdul Lateef breathed his last while being taken to hospital. Others are undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Mangaluru.

Bengaluru, Jul 4: With the increasing number of COVID-19 cases in Bengaluru, the state government has decided to impose a total lockdown in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits.

The lockdown will start from 8 pm today till 5 am on Monday. The sale of essential items will only be allowed during the total lockdown.

"Complete lockdown to be imposed from 8 pm today till 5 am on Monday in Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits, as per instructions by Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa in view of COVID-19," BBMP Commissioner Anil Kumar said on Saturday.

"Sale of essential items will be allowed during the lockdown, including meat shops. Police action will be taken against people found roaming outside unnecessarily," he said.

With the number of cases increasing by 994 in the last 24 hours, the total of cases in the city now stands at 7,713. Of these, 6,297 are active cases.

So far, Karnataka has 19,710 cases with 293 deaths. While 8,805 people have recovered from the deadly virus.

At the national level, the total number of cases have now surged to 6, 48,315 out of which 3, 94,227 patients have recorded, while 18,655 have lost their lives.

Bengaluru, Jul 13: Referring to political happenings in Rajasthan, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President and former Karnataka Minister D K Shivakumar on Monday expressed confidence, saying Sachin Pilot is a 'sincere Congressman' and he will not quit the party.

"No, he (Pilot) will not leave. I have full confidence that he will not leave. He is a very sincere Congressman like his father (Rajesh Pilot). He has built the party for the past six-seven years. He is the President (Rajasthan state unit), he has done his best for the party," Shivakumar added.

Talking to media here on Monday, he said, "there may be some issues, I'm not saying no, but everything will be sorted out." A crucial meeting of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) will be held at Jaipur on Monday, amid deepening political crisis in Rajasthan, and the party has issued a whip to all party legislators to attend without fail.
