Mangalore cargo vessel feared drowned off Lakshadweep coast; Six crew members missing

Mangalore, November 27: A cargo vessel is feared drowned along with its six crew members in the turbulent sea off the coast of Lakshadweep on Sunday morning.

Naval ships and aircraft have launched a search operation amidst strong winds, sources said.

The cargo vessel 'MSV Al-Akthar' had left Mangalore Old Port on November 24.

Shankara, the captain, had anchored the vessel on Saturday evening nearly half nautical mail away from Amini island of Lakshadweep. Amini island lies 304 km southwest of Mangalore.

The owner of the vessel Mustafa Shafi from Bengre Kasba, said that captain contacted him over mobile phone at 5:40 am today and pleaded to take immediate measures to rescue him and other crew members as the vessel was in danger.

The rescuers, who rushed to the spot on speedboats, after half an hour search, declared that the cargo vessel was missing.

Mustafa said that the 50% of the goods on-board the 'MSV Al-Akthar' had been unloaded on Saturday evening to a small boat, as the vessel cannot reach the shore. The captain had dropped three anchors and waiting for another boat to unload remaining goods today. However, the sea suddenly turned turbulent and strong winds began to blow, he said.

He said that apart from Calicut based captain, there were five Gujarati crew members on the vessel.

Mangaluru, Mar 27: In a shocking development, an infant with no travel history tests positive for the deadly novel coronavirus in Dakshina Kannada, taking the total coronavirus positive cases to six. 

The 10-month-old child, hailing from Sajipanadu Village in Bantwal Taluk was admitted to a hospital at Deralakatte in Mangaluru for treatment on March 23 as it had developed respiratory problems. 

On March 24, the child’s condition worsened and hence his throat swabs was sent for COVID-19 testing. Today, reports of the tests confirmed that the child was infected with COVID-19.

Bengaluru, Apr 17: The Karnataka government has announced the purchase of an additional two lakh rapid test kits for COVID-19 detection at a task force meeting on Thursday.

Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai and other senior officials were present at the task force meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Dr CN Ashwathnarayan.

The Chinese government has agreed to supply rapid test kits to an officially listed company, which will increase the number of tests once it arrives, Ashwathnarayan said.

Moreover, 250 kiosks will be set up in the state to collect saliva samples of a person with COVID-19 symptoms. Such kiosks will be launched one-by-one in taluks of the state.

Ashwathnarayan explained that this would increase the sample collection process and prevent the spread of disease.

Ashwathnarayan said the purchase of the required 25,000 RT-PCR kits was also approved.
He stated that COVID-19 patients should be treated at government-appointed hospitals. A separate coronavirus helpline will be made operational to address the queries of people, Ashwathnarayan said.

During Ramadan, it has been decided not to allow mass prayers, he said. And added that tracing of cases related to the Tablighi Jamaat meeting in Delhi has been completed in the state.

Bengaluru, July 31: Denying irregularities in covid-19 equipment purchase by the Karnataka government, the state unit of the BJP has issued legal notices to Congress leaders Siddaramaiah and D K Shivakumar demanding that they apologize or face a defamation suit. 

The notices seek a public apology for the allegations levelled against the government on irregularities in the procurement of Covid-19 equipment and supplies. 

Both Siddaramaiah and Shivakumar, the Karnataka Congress president, have been doggedly pursuing allegations of corruption against the BJP government and have demanded a judicial inquiry. 

BJP general secretary N Ravi Kumar said that while the Congress leaders claimed that Rs 4,157 crore was spent during Covid-19, they also allege that the government has not responded to any of the 20 letters written by them. "If the government has not provided any answer to the Opposition, where did they get the figures from," he said.

None of the allegations of corruption is specific and the statements made are factually incorrect. "These statements, without any basis, have been issued calculatedly to lower the image and damage the reputation of the government, the Bharatiya Janata Party, representatives of the party and the ministers in the government," the notice issued on behalf of Ravi Kumar read.
