Reverberations 2011' concludes on a joyful note

Mangalore, November 27: 'Reverberations 2011', the semi annual conference of Toastmasters Clubs concluded on Sunday evening on a joyful and sentimental note at Hotel Ocean Pearl in the city.

The conference brought together 287 delegates representing the 170 plus clubs of Toastmasters District 82, Division 1 comprising of South India and Sri Lanka. The Sri Lankan delegation comprised 82 members. The highlights of the conference were the two district level contests (Humourous Speech Contest and Evaluation Contest) and the four educational sessions by inspirational speakers.

The day started with the district Humorous Speech Contest followed by an educational session on the subject 'The lies we tell: How the truth can make you a great speaker and a district Champion' by Dhananjaya, the District Champion for 2011.

The afternoon session was devoted exclusively to the educational session on the subject 'Educate, Entertain and Energize' by Ed Tate, from Colorado, USA, who is the Toastmasters' international champion speaker.

The conference concluded with prize distribution by the District Governor Zameen M. Saleem. The following were declared as the winners of the two contests contests.

Rajdeep Manwani of Division 'L', won the Evaluation Contest, while Roshanta Jayatunge of Division 'J' and Lekh E.M. of Division 'E' emerged first and second runners up.

Rajashekhar M. of Division 'B' won the Humorous Speech Contest, while Mathew Jacob of Division 'K' and Dayan Fernando of Division 'A' emerged first and second runners up respectively.

District Governor Zameen M. Saleem expressed great appreciation of the Toastmaster community of Mangalore for hosting the conference in an exemplary manner. Division Governor Hima Urmila Shetty delivered the vote of thanks. The meet concluded with a vibrant cultural performance (Manipuri martial arts and our local 'Veera Gathe') by the students of Alva's Education Foundation, Moodabidri.

The five Toastmasters Clubs of Mangalore, namely Winners Club Toastmasters, Mangalore Toastmasters, INFYnity Toastmasters, ProAct Toastmasters and Inspiron Toastmasters are the hosts of this grand event under leadership of Conference Chairman CA M.N. Pai.

Bengaluru, Jul 7: Vasudeva Maiya, former CEO of Sri Guru Raghavendra Co-operative Bank, was found dead in his car in Bengaluru on July 6.

The Subramanyapura police have begun an investigation into Vasudeva Maiya's death.  Source said that he committed suicide. He was a native of Kota in Udupi district.

The car was found parked a little away from Maiya's house at around 6.30 pm on July 6.

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had in January imposed restrictions on Sri Guru Raghavendra Co-operative Bank and limited withdrawals to Rs 35,000 by customers.

On June 18, Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) raided five offices of Sri Guru Raghavendra Co-operative Bank, in relation to alleged misappropriation of Rs 1,400 crore.

The RBI, Enforcement Directorate, Criminal Investigation Department, and Registrar of Cooperative Societies are looking into the financial irregularities at the lender.

The police also conducted searches at residences of Maiya and the bank's chairman K Ramakrishna in relation to the above mentioned case, sources said.

Mangaluru, Jun 26: In a gut-wrenching incident, a pack of stray dogs attacked a herd of barking deer, also known as Indian muntjac at Dr Shivaram Karanth Biological Park at Pilikula on the outskirts of the city last night.

Dhama H Jayaprakash Bhandary, director of the biological park said: “Due to heavy rains a tree was uprooted damaging the compound wall of the park one day ago. Last night pack of stray dogs entered the park and attacked the barking deer. When the incident came to light, 10 barking deer had lost their lives and many others were injured.”

He said that five years ago they had rescued four barking deer that bred and multiplied to 40. “We had planned to release some of the barking deer to jungle and retain around a dozen in the park. Last night’s incident has shocked us,” he said, adding that the injured barking deer are being treated.

Udupi, May 18: As many as eight fresh coronavirus positive cases have been reported in coastal districts of Udupi and Uttara Kannada. 

No fresh positive case was reported in Dakshina Kannada since yesterday.

According to Health and Family Welfare Department, two men aged 38 and 24 years, an 8-year-old boy and a 24-year-old woman tested positive for coronavirus in Udupi district today. 

All of them were under quarantine after returning from Maharashtra recently. They were shifted to covid-19 hospital for treatment. With this the number of covid-19 positive cases in Udupi district mounted to 15.

Meanwhile, Uttara Kannada district also received a jolt with four more cases. Yesterday it had reported eight cases.
