President's Secretary expresses concern over situation of minorities in Mangalore

Mangalore, November 28: Dr Christy Leon Fernandez, Secretary to the President of India Pratibha Devisingh Patil expressed his concern over the situation of minorities, including Christians, during his meeting with Rev Dr Aloysius Paul D'Souza, the Bishop of Mangalore on Sunday, November 27 in the Bishop's House of Mangalore.

He said that minorities should be very cautious lest there should be laws and legislations endangering the existence of minorities and their rights.

He was honoured by the Bishop of Mangalore on behalf of the Christians of Mangalore.

“I am very much impressed by the spiritual geography of central Milagres Church of Mangalore. I will carry a picture of Our Lady of Miracles and add to my collection of unique pictures and statues of Mother Mary,” said art lover Dr Fernandez.

Dr Fernandez is a Christian originally from Cochin. He is a 1973 Gujarat cadre Indian Administrative Service officer. He is holding the top bureaucratic post in Rashtrapati Bhawan since 2007 July immediately after the present President had taken charge of the office. He was the Tourism Secretary in the central government for four years before being appointed as the Secretary to the President.

Even though he was due for retirement in June 2009, he has been asked by the President to continue as her secretary till her tenure is completed in mid-2012.

PRO Fr William Menezes, president of Rachana Marcel Monteiro, president of Konkanni Prachar Sanchalan Roy Castelino, Christian lay leaders Walter D'Souza, Melwyn P. Noronha, Fr Rithesh Rodrigues and others were present on the occasion.

Mysuru, Feb 21: Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said Amulya Leona, who raised pro-Pakistan slogans, had links with Naxalites.

Yediyurappa said that Amulya's links with Naxalites have been proved in an investigation. "She must be punished and action will be taken against the people behind it," he said.

"Bail should not be given to Amulya. Her father has also said he won't protect her. Its proved now that she had contacts with Naxals. Proper punishment should be given," he added.

While speaking to reporters at Mysuru Airport, the chief minister said unless actions are taken against the organisations who provoke them to make such comments, it is not possible to control them.

Yediyurappa suspects that the incident was a conspiracy to disturb peace and harmony in the state.

Minister B C Patil said that such incidents should not repeat. "It appears that youths are misused for such anti-national activities, he said.

Uppinangady, Feb 9: Two members of a family were killed after the car collided with a tanker on the NH 75 at Bedrody near Uppinangady last night.

Police said on Sunday that the deceased have been identified as Jainy Saji (30) and her elder brother Jeeson (40).

Jainy and Jeeson were going to Uppinangady when a tanker, coming from the opposite direction, rammed into their car.

Lucknow, Feb 4: Even as anti-NRC protests continue to rage across the country, the Lucknow University has queered the pitch by demanding citizenship proof from RTI applicants.

The Lucknow University (LU) refused to provide the information sought by the people who filed the Right to Information (RTI) unless they furnished the proof that they were Indian citizens.

Alok Chantia, one of the RTI applicants who was refused information by the varsity, said that he had lodged a complaint with the vice-chancellor of the varsity but even then he could not get the desired information.

"It is shocking how the university has twisted the RTI law as per its whims and fancy. It does not have any authority to do so," said the RTI applicant.

Chantia, also a faculty member at a degree college here, had sought details of appointment of teachers for self-financed courses and their pay scale.

"It is possible that some applicants who may not be familiar with the provisions of the RTI, may have furnished proof of their citizenship to the varsity to get the information but that cannot become a rule," he pointed out.

When contacted, university officials admitted that such a practice had been going on in the varsity for the past few years.

"This practice started during the tenure of the former vice-chancellor S.P. Singh and still continues," said a senior varsity official.
