Mangalore, November 30: Protesting against the Union Cabinet's decision to allow 51 per cent foreign direct investment (FDI) in multi-brand retail, the Dakshina Kannada district committee of Bharatiya Janata Party on Wednesday staged a demonstration in front of the office of Deputy Commissioner here.

The protesters, who raised slogans against the Centre and grant of permission to foreign companies, expressed fear that the move may not only lead to massive unemployment, but destruct the existing business and supply chains, as well.

Leading the protest, District BJP President Padmanabha Kottari lashed out at the Congress led UPA government's unilateral decisions in crucial matters.

“Ignoring the voice of opposition, a few cabinet members going on to the extent of taking such an abrupt decision, which would affect the lives of crores of Indian citizens is an example for the irresponsible attitude of the government”, he said.

“At present around eight per cent of workers are employed in retail trade in India and at least four percent people of this country have found their future in it. About 15 crore people are maintaining their families with it in every lane and block of the country. If the foreign companies are allowed in, all these people would be rendered unemployed and ultimately ruined,” he warned.

Before taking such a controversial decision the ruling party was supposed to discuss the issue in the parliament. The government should also have had discussed the issue with the leaders of retail market sector, who are the real victims of this decision. However, the abrupt decision shows the keenness of the Congress led government in serving the vested interests, he said.

Mr Kottari went on to charge that the Government had taken this decision under pressure of foreign governments and companies. There is also the possibility of heavy corruption in the process of this decision, he said.

Companies like Wal-Mart, Tesco, King Fisher, and Carrefour have already been ruling the global retail sector. Now, they are trying to establish their dominance over new countries. Being the biggest market, India is now in their minds, he said.

He also accused Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh of misleading people by stating that FDI in India's retail sector would benefit farmers. “The Union government has reduced to be a mere puppet in the hands of vested interests, business tycoons and multi-national companies”, he said.

Bundh

Stating that BJP will never allow foreign companies to open multi brand retail stores, in the land of India, he said that the District BJP will support country-wide bundh called by Confederation of All India Traders on December 1 against the Centre's move.

Local BJP leaders Shreekar Prabhu, Monappa Bhandary, Nithin Kumar, Sulochana GK Bhat were among the protesters.

Bengaluru, Jul 22: On Wednesday morning starlet and Bigg Boss 3 contestant Jayashree Ramaiah sent social media into a tizzy with an update that read, “I quit. Goodbye to this f*****g world and depression.” Friends and acquaintances immediately began reaching out to the actor asking her to return their concerned calls and desist from taking any extreme steps.

“Jayashree has been battling depression for a while now. She had family issues and was also concerned about the lack of work,” shares actor Ashvithi Shetty. The Ramachari twins were in touch with Jayashree since they met at a celebrity cricket match four years ago. “She has shared several times about how low she’s been and I would try to cheer her up. But the problem was that she’d keep changing her phone number so often that it became difficult to keep track of how she was doing,” states Ashvithi.

Around four months ago, Jayashree moved into her own home and mentioned to her that she was happy with this new development in her life. “But she went retreated again and a few days ago, I messaged her on social media and she said she was doing fine. So I was shocked to see this update on Wednesday morning,” avers the actor. Repeated calls finally elicited a message from Jayashree that she was getting admitted to the hospital. “But I also got contradictory information that she had been discharged and had been taken to the hospital again but she was refusing to go inside. I am awaiting more clarity on the issue,” sums up Ashvithi.

Thiruvananthapuram, Jan 26: Sister Lucy Kalappura, one of the nuns who protested against rape accused Bishop Franco Mulakkal, on Saturday claimed that she is being targeted at the convent and not being provided food.

Sister Lucy was dismissed from Franciscan Clarist congregation for supporting sisters protesting against the Bishop.

"I am being targeted at the convent and not being provided food. When I asked the reason, I was told I have been dismissed from the convent and they are not responsible for feeding me," said Sister Lucy while speaking to the reporters.

She has alleged that all this began after the release of her autobiography "Karthavinte Namathil" which means 'In the name of God'. In her book she had alleged sexual misconduct among priests and nuns.

"They prepare food and after having it they lock it in the cupboard. When I asked the reason behind this, they told me that I have been dismissed," said Sister Lucy.

"Now I am managing it all by myself with egg and tapioca that grows in the convent compound. Earlier they used to keep the leftover lunch and I used to adjust with that, but after my book was released, they started to lock the food in the cupboard," she added.

Sister Lucy also claimed that she had filed three complaints with the police on August 19, August 20 and on December 13. They had taken her statement but no action was taken.

"If the police would have taken some action against the convent authorities, they would not have behaved this way. An FIR was registered based on the three complaints but no action was taken. This gives them more power to act against me. I have drafted a letter to the Chief Minister to raise my complaint," said Sister Lucy.

Bishop Mulakkal, a senior member of the Roman Catholic clergy in India, was arrested in 2018 following allegations by a nun that he repeatedly raped and sexually assaulted her at Kuravilangad convent between 2014 and 2016, a charge that he denies.
