Mangalore, December 3: Brushing aside the allegations that 'Prevention of Communal and Targeted Violence (Access to Justice and Reparations) Bill 2011' proposed by Union Government is anti-Hindu, Senior Congress leader B Janardhana Poojary said the Bill is aimed at protecting not only religious minorities but linguistic minorities as well.

Addressing the media persons at District Congress Office here on Saturday Mr Poojary lamented that the Sangh parivar, out of ignorance has already started labeling the Bill as anti-Hindu, even though it was yet to be tabled in the parliament.

He also revealed that, the leaders of saffron outfits, in the recently held protest rally against the Bill, have misquoted some of the sections of the Bill.

Stating that the Bill will prevent acts which may result in injury or harm to a person or property belonging to any group, he clarified that, in this Bill the word “group” refers to any religious or linguistic minority in any State.

In fact, the Bill would also protect a large section of Hindus. “It will also protect linguistic minorities such as Tulu speaking Brahmins, Konkanis, Bunts, Billavas etc. Are they not Hindus?” he questioned.

Referring to Bal Thackeray's recent remarks on Kannadigas, the Congress leader said once the Bill passed, it would prevent such offences.

“Hindus need not be afraid of this Bill”, he said adding that it would only target only those who involve in communal violence.

'Made-Made Snana may spread AIDS'

Replying to a query on controversial ritual of 'Made-Made Snana' at government-run Kukke Subrahmanya Temple, Mr Poojary said there are possibilities of spread AIDS, TB and skin diseases, as the devotees offer 'Urulu Seve' without wearing clothes, over the plantain leaves having leftovers of meal served to Brahmins.

“Come Kudroli Gokarnanatha Temple you can offer clean and hygienic Urulu Seve. That too wearing your clothes,” he said.

If the chief pontiff of Pejavara mutt Vishwesha Theertha Swamiji and Dharmasthala Dharmadhikari Dr D Veerendra Heggade have any morality, they should oppose such acts, he challenged.

Mangaluru, Feb 16: Leaving spectators awestruck, Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda ran 142.5 meters in 13.62 seconds at traditional buffalo race Kambala, following which people started comparing him to former Jamaican Sprinter Usain Bolt.

Gowda, who is from Mudbidri town, accomplished the feat during a Kambala race in a paddy field in Kadri on February 1.

"People are comparing me to Usain Bolt. He is a world champion, I am only running in a slushy paddy field," said Srinivasa Gowda.

People took to social media and drew a parallel between him and Bolt. Twitterati hailed Gowda and his accomplishment on the muddy grounds.

Kambala is an annual buffalo race held in the southwestern state of Karnataka.

Traditionally, it is sponsored by local Tuluva landlords and households in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi.

"I'll call Karnataka's Srinivasa Gowda for trials by top SAI Coaches. There's lack of knowledge in masses about the standards of Olympics especially in athletics where ultimate human strength & endurance are surpassed. I'll ensure that no talents in India is left out untested," Union Sports and Youth Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju tweeted on Saturday.

Mandya, July 30: BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel on Wednesday said Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has done a commendable job in tackling the Covid-19 situation and floods and that the question of changing the leadership does not arise.

Karnataka on Wednesday reported 5,503 new cases of Covid-19 and 92 related fatalities, taking the total number of infections to 1,12,504 and the death toll to 2,147.

Speaking to reporters here, Kateel said, "Deputy Chief Minister Laxman Savadi has gone to Delhi to discuss the projects sanctioned to state with the central minister. There is no need to read too much into it."

Replying to a query on graft charges against the BSY government by the Congress, Kateel said, "Congress national president, state unit president are out on bail in graft cases . Why did a Congress leader who calls himself a bande (rock) has approached court seeking stay on CBI probe? Before making any allegations against the government, they should think about 'irregularities' in Indira Canteen and housing schemes," he charged.

Instead of instilling confidence and hope among the people in these testing times, the Congress is unnecessarily creating fear with petty politics, he told reporters in Shravanabelagola, Hassan district.

"The Yediyurappa-led BJP government is working day and night to tackle the Covid-19. Similarly, several non-governmental organisations have joined hands with the government in the fight against the virus. But, the Congress is only creating confusion by issuing baseless statements," Kateel said.

Bengaluru, Apr 13: Eminent scientist and NITI Aayog member V K Saraswat said on Monday the number of COVID- 19 cases is not going to go beyond what's being reported daily in India as he maintained that the country is in the process of flattening the curve.

The former Scientific Adviser to Defence Minister said the coronavirus positive cases have seen a sharper rise in the last four-five days because of increase in the number of testing.

"It's a good sign; all those asymptomatic cases lying hidden they are also coming out," Saraswat told PTI. "We certainly had a catalytic factor which was basically this (Nizamuddin) Markaz problem which has actually created clusters at different places and that has also been one of the factors for the kind of rise that has taken place."

But he said India is in a much better shape compared to other nations in the battle against COVID-19. "I can only say that the rate is not going to go beyond what has been going on now, may be 700 to 800 cases per day. So, we are in the process of flattening the curve."

The government's decision to declare nation-wide lockdown has paid dividends, Saraswat, a former chief of the Defence Research and Development Organisation, said.

Noting that India has seen a series of virus attacks in the last 15-20 years including Chikungunya and Dengue, he said the emphasis now should be on more and more R & D to find vaccines in advance.
