M'lore varsity to host international conference on Synthetic and Structural Chemistry

Mangalore, December 5: Mangalore University will be organising a three-day International Conference on Synthetic and Structural Chemistry (ICSSC-2011) on its Mangalagangothri campus near here from December 8.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Monday, University Vice Chancellor of the Prof T C Shivashankar Murthy said that the conference gains significance in that the UN General Assembly, at its 63 rd session in December 2008, had declared 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry in recognition of its achievements of chemistry and its contribution to wellbeing of mankind.

He said that department of Chemistry thought that it is qualified to host the conference, to commemorate the year. The objective is to provide a forum for exchange of ideas and create an environment for collaborative endeavours in frontier areas, he added.

The 3 day International Conference will be inaugurated on December 8, 2011. Prof T N Guru Rao, Solid State and Structural Chemistry Unit, IISC, Bangalore will deliver the key note address. Prof M R Gajendragad , Former Vice Chancellor, Kuvempu University , Dr KA Suresh , Director Centre for Soft Matter Research , Bangalore , Dr P M Akberali, Managing Director, Apotex Pharmachem India, Pvt ltd will be the chief guests. Prof Murthy himself would preside over the function.

About 20 experts are delivering the plenary and invited lectures on varied topics in the research areas of synthetic and structural chemistry. About 300 research papers will be presented in oral and poster presentations. More than 500 delegates from various Universities, Industries and Research institutes are participating in the conference. In the concluding session, internationally well-known crystallographer Prof. H K Fun from University of Sains, Malaysia will deliver the Valedictory address. Prof BS Sherigara, DR K J Divakar, Prof S P Hiremath will preside over the function.

8 returnees from Gujarat test covid-19 positive in 'green zone' Shivamogga

Shivamogga, May 10: Karnataka Minister KS Eshwarappa on Sunday informed that eight people who returned to the state from Gujarat have tested positive for COVID-19 in Shivamogga district.

Shivamogga district is under the green zone category.

"Eight people who have returned from Ahmedabad, Gujarat have tested positive for COVID-19 in Shivamogga," said Eshwarappa.

Last week, the district administration had asked shopkeepers to open their shops on alternate days in order to avoid crowding.

According to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, the state has so far 794 confirmed COVID-19 cases which include 386 cured or discharged cases and 30 deaths.

RTI applicants asked to furnish citizenship proof amid anti-NRC protests

Lucknow, Feb 4: Even as anti-NRC protests continue to rage across the country, the Lucknow University has queered the pitch by demanding citizenship proof from RTI applicants.

The Lucknow University (LU) refused to provide the information sought by the people who filed the Right to Information (RTI) unless they furnished the proof that they were Indian citizens.

Alok Chantia, one of the RTI applicants who was refused information by the varsity, said that he had lodged a complaint with the vice-chancellor of the varsity but even then he could not get the desired information.

"It is shocking how the university has twisted the RTI law as per its whims and fancy. It does not have any authority to do so," said the RTI applicant.

Chantia, also a faculty member at a degree college here, had sought details of appointment of teachers for self-financed courses and their pay scale.

"It is possible that some applicants who may not be familiar with the provisions of the RTI, may have furnished proof of their citizenship to the varsity to get the information but that cannot become a rule," he pointed out.

When contacted, university officials admitted that such a practice had been going on in the varsity for the past few years.

"This practice started during the tenure of the former vice-chancellor S.P. Singh and still continues," said a senior varsity official.

5 Covid Day Care Centres with 870 beds opened in Udupi

Udupi, Jul 20: Five COVID Day Care Centres have been opened here on Monday with combined 870 bed for asymptomatic Covid-19 patients.

The Centres are set up at Karkala (1), Udupi (3) and Kundapura (1). Presently more than 100 patients are being treated in these Centres.

These Centres have been opened in the wake of high incidences of Covid-19 cases in the district. They are set up for asymptomatic patients who do not wish to be treated at home.
