Kukke Subrahmanya: Made Snana bundh peaceful

Subrahmanya, December 6: The bundh, called by various organisations favouring 'Made Snana' at Kukke Subrahmanya temple on Monday, was peaceful.

Hundreds of protesters, including students, took out a rally to register their support for continuing the controversial ritual, which has been widely criticised as superstitious and perpetuating the evils of caste system. They demanded that the sanctity of the temple should be maintained in the wake of protests by those who were against the ritual.

Astrologer Kabyadi Jayaramacharya, addressing the protesters, said that Malekudiyas, who form the majority of devotees observing the ritual, have a special place in the history of the Subramanya temple. He said the 'Made Snana' is performed voluntarily by them and they should not be forced to stop it, he added.

Majority of the shops had downed the shutters, aside from shops selling pooja items, silver articles, medical stores and a hospital.

Though buses plied as usual, autorickshaw, jeep and car drivers supported the bundh by suspending their services.

As the hotels served breakfast free of cost, the devotees from other places were not affected by the bundh.

Bengaluru, Mar 25: Karnataka Minister Dr K Sudhakar has been allocated all matters related to COVID-19 by the Governor on the advice of Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.
Health Minister B Sriramulu, who earlier handled matters related to COVID-19, has been allotted the Backward Class Welfare Development portfolio.
Karnataka on Monday announced a complete lockdown in the state till April 1.
"In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak, the entire state will be locked down from 12 o'clock night of March 23 to April 1. People are requested to strictly follow it to contain the coronavirus spread," Yediyurappa had said.

Bengaluru, Mar 10: Congress leader NA Haris on Tuesday said that keeping Jammu and Kashmir leaders under house arrest is not democratic.

Speaking to media persons he said, "It is not done. Keeping the leaders under house arrest in Jammu and Kashmir is not democratic."

Haris said that nobody is talking about it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not talking about it and nothing is happing.

"About Kashmir, it is better to say less as nobody is talking about it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi is not talking about it and nothing is happening. It does not look good," he told media.

"I think leaders should be brought to the table and discussion on issues should take place. Do whatever has to be done for the country," he added.

The Jammu and Kashmir Administration had on February 5 invoked the Public Safety Act (PSA) against former Chief Ministers Mehbooba Mufti and Omar Abdullah. The duo was detained after the Central government abrogated Article 370 last year.

Mangaluru, Jan 11: CISF officials detained a passenger at Mangaluru International Airport here and seized from him currencies of foreign countries worth about Rs five lakh here on Saturday.

Official sources said that the passenger, identified as Shahul Hameed Theruvath, was supposed to take the Spice jet flight SG 059 for Dubai.

During the X BIS screening process, CISF officials noticed some suspicious image in Shahul’s hand baggage.

The thorough check of bag revealed foreign currencies of various countries worth Rs 5.48 lakh. The seized currencies were 76 US dollars of 100 denomination, Chinese Yuan, Malaysian Ringgits and Turkish Lira of smaller denomination. The currencies that were in his possession did not have any legal permission.

The personnel handed over the foreign currency recovered and the passenger to Customs officials for further inquiry.
