Philatelic exhibition on birds attempts Guinness world records

Udupi, December 8: SMS College Brahmavar on Wednesday organised a philatelic exhibition on birds by its office assistant Daniel Monteiro in a bid claim for the Guinness World Records, at the SMS Community Hall, Brahmavar.

A record number of 5000 stamps on the topic birds were exhibited. Daniel Monthero said that the present Guinness World Record on collection of highest number of stamps on birds is in the name of one Paul Ervin of Germany, who has a collection of over 2,400 stamps on birds.

The exhibition included world's first stamp on birds- mute swan, issued in 1854, in Western Australia, India's first postal stamp on birds- Magpie and Jay, issued in 1968, diamond studded stamp on Mute Swan issued in Austria, gold plated stamp on US State Birds and Flowers etc.

Deputy Commissioner of Udupi MT Reju inaugurated the exhibition. Former Superintendent of Posts S Gopal, President of the DK District Philatelists' Association MK Krishnaiah, Ornithologist Dr NA Madhyastha, Commissioner of Mangalore Urban Development Authority Ajith Kumar Hegde, Principal of SMS College Prof K Narayan, Principal of Little Rock Indian School Mathew C Ninan and others were present. V Rev Ramban GM Skaria presided over the programme.

In his speech Krishniah wished that Monthero would soon win an international gold medal in philately.

Montero had started collecting stamps at the age of 10 years. He started specializing on stamps under the directions of philatelist Vittaldas Shanubhag of Udupi. For collecting rarest stamps traveled across the country.

Bengaluru,  Mar 26: The nationwide lockdown in the view of coronavirus outbreak has driven some people to the edge. In Karnataka, within less than 24 hours, two cases of people creating trouble for police personnel have come to light.

On Wednesday, a middle-aged man was shot in his leg by the police after he tried to assault two police constables of Sanjaynagar police station. The police constables were identified as Manjunatha and Basavararaju.
The accused reportedly breached the check post at Bhoopasandra. He and his friends were over-speeding and performing stunts on bikes. When the policemen tried to secure them after giving them a chase, they attacked the cops.

When they were taken into custody, one of them again tried to escape and hurled stones and bricks on the cops. In order to prevent further assault, the police then fired two rounds – one in the air and the second one on his left leg.

Kasaragod, Mar 23: With 19 more positive cases reported on Monday, surveillance against people coming out of their houses and wandering around in public places has been intensified in the district.

With today's addition, the total number of positive cases of Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) has increased to 38 in Kasaragod.

Mangaluru, July 31: Coronavirus related deaths in Dakshina Kannada continued to surge, with the district administration recording five more fatalities in a day, thus taking the tally to 155.

The district has recorded multiple deaths every day from July 1 to 31. A majority of the deaths are due to comorbid conditions.

Among the five deaths reported today, a 47-year-old man from Mangaluru, was admitted to private hospital on July 30, and breathed his last on the same day. He was suffering from ARDS, Type 1 respiratory failure, COPD, Type II DM, HTN and died due to cardiac arrest.

Another patient was a 75-year-old man from Bantwal, who was admitted to a private hospital on July 23, and passed away on July 30. He was suffering from acute coronary syndrome, pneumonia (ARDS), metabolic encephalopathy, acute kidney injury, systemic hypertension, and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

The third patient was a 63-year-old man from Mangaluru, who was admitted to a private hospital on July 18, and passed away on July 30. He was suffering from ARDS, septic shock, renal failure, and secondary bacterial infection.

The fourth patient was an 88-year-old woman from Davanagere, who was admitted to a private hospital on July 9, and passed away on July 30. She was suffering from septic shock, and secondary bacterial infection.

The fifth patient was a 75-year-old man from Mangaluru. He was admitted to Wenlock hospital on July 15, and passed away on July 30. He was suffering from refractory ARDS, septic shock, renal failure, acute coronary event, arrhythmias, pulmonary thromboembolism, and hemoperitoneum.

The district administration said that though the above patients contracted coronavirus, the exact cause of their deaths is being investigated by a team of experts and their report is awaited.

On the other hand, Dakshina Kannada district recorded a total of 204 fresh cases, taking the tally to 5,713. Among the 204 new cases are 75 primary contacts, 63 with influenza-like illness (ILI), and 14 with severe acute respiratory illness (SARI). As many as 52 cases are under investigation. As many as 70 patients were discharged on Friday from Wenlock as well as private hospitals.

As per the district health bulletin, a total of 40,706 samples have been tested so far and 34,993 out of them have tested negative. Among the 5,713 positive cases reported in the district, only 2,929 are currently active. As many as 2,631 persons have recovered and been discharged.
