14th annual Rotary Orphanage Olympics on Sunday

Mangalore, December 8: The Rotary Club of Mangalore Central (RCMC) as part of its community development projects is organising the '14th annual Rotary Orphanage Olympics' at Mangala Stadium on Sunday, December 11.

Announcing this at a press meet here on Thursday, Rtn Manjunath Revankar, President, RCMC, said the day long sports and cultural event was being organised exclusively for the 800 orphanage children residing at various orphanages in and around Mangalore.

The event will commence at 9:00 am, he said.

N Yogish Bhat, Dy Speaker, Karnataka Legislative Assembly will be the chief guest of the event. Rtn Rohinath, Asst Governor, RCMC will be the guest of honour, while Mr Manjunath himself is expected to preside over the inaugural function.

The cultural event and valedictory ceremony will be held in the afternoon at Canara High School Urva Auditorium. Past Rotary Dist 3180 Governor and Dist Rotary Foundation Chairman Rtn Surya Prakash Bhat will distribute the prizes to the winners and runners-up in the competition. He will also award the rolling trophy to an orphanage for their overall performance.

Mr Manjunath said that the Club has initiated this fun fare festival in the year 1996.

“It is our aim to provide platform for the enthusiastic children on this special day to display their hidden talents and prove their sport skills. It will give them a sense of freedom and feeling of enjoyment on this memorable day”, he said.

Rtn Dr B Devdas Rai, Chairman, Organising Committee and Rtn Dr Sureshchandra Shetty, Secretary were present at the press meet.

Bengaluru, July 20: The Karnataka government has reiterated that no final decision has so far been taken on reopening of schools in the state.

The clarification comes after minutes of the July 15 HRD ministry meeting where Karnataka education department officials said schools are reopening on September 1 went viral on social media. 

“The state government has not decided yet on starting schools. That they will reopen in September was only a general opinion expressed by our officials at the meeting. At present, we have no plans to start schools unless there is a conducive environment. There’s no need for anxiety,” said primary and secondary minister S Suresh Kumar.

Kumar said the government is involved in meeting the education sector’s changed priorities in the current scenario.

The minutes were of a virtual conference on school-safety plans, with representatives of state governments and Union territories expressing views on reopening of schools. 

Against the name of Karnataka, “After September 1” was written. Similar datelines were given by Kerala, Ladakh, Manipur, Rajasthan, Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, while in case of many other states it said “no decision”.

An education department official said Karnataka submitted to MHRD that it will be able to take a decision only after September 1, depending on the situation in the state.

Mangaluru, Mar 29: Infosys Foundation Chairperson Sudha Murty has sent the second consignment of N95 Masks, Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) and Sanitisers worth about Rs 73 lakhs, City police Commissioner Dr P S Harsha said on Sunday.

"These will be primarily used by Doctors, Nurses and Paramedics of Wenlock Hospital here and masks by the frontline staff of ASHA and police at risk of exposure to the virus,” Dr Harsha tweeted on Sunday.

The district has received the first consignment with critical medical equipment worth Rs 28 lakh from the Infosys foundation on Saturday, March 28.

Bengaluru, Jul 27: The Karnataka government on Sunday directed the Director General of Police Praveen Sood to submit a detailed report on the internal security following the United Nations' observation that international terror outfit IS was active in the state.

The UN report stated that Al-Qaeda in the Indian subcontinent, which reportedly has between 150 and 200 members from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, was reportedly planning attacks in the region.

It also warned that there were 'significant numbers' of ISIS operatives in Karnataka and Kerala. Reacting to the UN report, Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said the state government has taken a serious note of the report on the activities of IS in the state.

The state government is in touch with the Centre and the neighbouring states to keep a close watch on the activities of suspicious people and their supporters.

"In this context, it has been decided to strengthen the internal security of the state. The Director General of Police has been asked to submit a detailed report," Bommai said in a release.

The state is also keeping a strict vigil on all those entering Bengaluru from other states, the Minister said. He recalled that the state police had arrested several members of Al-Hind organisation in January last and Jamaat- ul-Mujahideen from Bangladesh in 2018 and 2019. He added that the National Investigation Agency is investigating the case of JMB.
