Moily unhappy at not being invited for Kannada Sahitya Sammelan

Mangalore, December 11: Union Minister for Corporate Affairs, M. Veerappa Moily on Sunday, kicked up a possible row by announcing at a public forum that he had not been invited for the 78th Kannada Sahitya Sammelan, currently under way in Gangavathi.

The three-day event in the North Karnataka town had seen a galaxy of political leaders including chief minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda and a host of ministers attending various sessions. Mr. Gowda had attended the inaugural-day ceremony.

Speaking at the 'Sahithigalondige Mukhamukhi', an interactive session with noted writers as part of the Beary Sahitya Sammelan at Town Hall, Mr. Moily said, “I have not got an invite for the Sammelan. I don't claim to be a great writer. But definitely I have contributed my bit to literature. It is sad that they (Sahitya Parishat) did not consider me worthy of inviting. I don't expect me to be called as a guest. I would have run to Gangavathi as a member of the audience. Unfortunately, the Sahitya Parishat people don't know whom they should invite.”

Mr. Moily spoke extensively about the cultural plurality of India and the role played by different languages in strengthening the pluralism of the country.

Mr. Moily, a Kannada writer of impeccable fame, is known for his magnum opus Ramayana Mahanveshanam and is currently engaged in writing a novel on Draupadi.

A trule lover of literature and culture, Mr. Moily attended the Sammelan despite having other engagements later in the day. "I was invited to attend the valedictory function. But I had some other engagements later in the day. I have to travel to Mumbai and later to Delhi. So please forgive me for gatecrashing," Mr. Moily said. Even after his 30-minute long speech he came down from the dias and remained seated in the front row and listened to Dr. Jayanth Kaikini, P. Sheshadri and Vaidehi in rapt attentioin as a member of the audience.

Bengaluru, Apr 8: The Karnataka government is in favour of lifting the coronavirus lockdown in districts which remained free of the virus infection, subject to approval from the Centre, Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said on Wednesday.

In an interview to, he also said the state intended to relax liquor sales, stopped since the 21-day lockdown was imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19, after April 14 in a bid to increase state revenues.

The chief minister said the state's legislators would take a 30 per cent salary cut.

According to officials, there were no COVID-19 cases in 12 districts of the total 30 districts in the state.

As on Wednesday, there were 181 COVID-19 cases in the state, including 5 deaths and 28 discharges.

"If the Prime Minister suggests to states to take decision (on lock-down) based on the situation in their respective states, my position is to take a call (on roll-back) in districts free from COVID-19", Yediyurappa said.

This is to allow people to go about their business and move about within the district and not from one district to another, after April 14, after taking the approval of the Prime Minister, he said.

Mangaluru, Mar 7: After coronavirus cases were confirmed in different parts of the country, there has been a sudden jump in demand for mask and safety gears like gloves and sanitizers in Mangaluru and Udupi.

With the increase in demand, medical shop owners said that they were finding it difficult to meet the demand.

In fact, there is a demand for bulk supply of masks and gloves. There was demand for masks when Covid-19 was confirmed in China two months ago. Bulk quantities of masks were purchased in order to supply them to Indian employees working in China. A few private firms had purchased masks from Mangaluru in the month of December.

Bengaluru/ Mangaluru, Aug 3: For the first time in many days, if not weeks, the number of recoveries in Karnataka was higher than new covid-19 cases in the state raising hope of some relief against the virus.

Karnataka confirmed 4752 new covid- 19 cases while the number of recoveries stood at 4776 in the 24 hours until 5 pm on Monday. The state also recorded 98 deaths. 

Medical education minister K.Sudhakar said that the recovery rate in Karnataka is at around 42%

"Everyday there is increase in recovery rate which is higher by 9.17% in Bengaluru city. Overall recovery rate of the state by Sunday evening was 42.81 % and it is 35.14% in Bengaluru," the minister posted on Twitter.

The total number of cases in Bengaluru crossed the 60,000 mark including 1497 cases on Monday.

The total number of cases in Mysuru breached 5000 cases as 372 persons tested positive. The mineral-rich district of Ballari recorded 305 cases. Other parts of Karnataka has seen a surge in cases with 15 out of the 30 districts reporting at least a 100 cases.

Dakshina Kananda

Dakshina Kannada district alone has recorded 153 new cases and seven deaths. 
Among the 153 new cases, 119 are from Mangaluru, 11 from Bantwal, six from Beltangady, four from Puttur, one from Sullia, and 12 from other districts.

The total number of covid positive cases in the district mounted to 6,168. Out of these, 3,138 cases are currently active. As many as 2,854 persons have recovered and been discharged, and 176 deaths have occurred so far.

Udupi

Udupi reported 126 fresh cases past 24 hours, according to health bulletin released by the Udupi district administration. They include 58 from Udupi, 34 from Kundapur, 28 from Karkala, and six from other districts. 

A total of 34,500 samples have been collected so far. 29,174 have turned out to be negative. As many as 4,800 confirmed cases of coronavirus have been reported so far in the district. 

As many as 2,812 patients have been discharged so far, and 1,952 cases are currently active. As per district bulletin, 36 deaths have occurred so far. One positive case has been transferred to Dakshina Kannada.
