I am sorry, says Outlook editor to Mangalore Bishop

New Delhi, December 12: English weekly Outlook has tendered an apology for publishing a defamatory letter against Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza of Mangalore in its Oct 10 issue.

“We sincerely apologize to the Bishop of Mangalore Diocese and to the members of the Catholic community for the oversight and regret the inconveniences caused,” wrote Outlook Editor-in Chief Vinod Mehta in a clarification published in the latest issue.

The weekly, without verifying its contents, had published the controversial letter written by one Joe A Lewis which stated that ” a recent raid by the Enforcement Directorate on a bishop in Mangalore resulted in the seizure of Rs 9 crore.”

The letter had also urged the magazine to get the matter investigated.

The weekly, following investigation, wrote that “we are happy to clarify that there was no such raid by the Enforcement Directorate on the bishop of Mangalore and nothing was seized.”

Mehta said he is contemplating legal proceedings against the letter writer for the “false, baseless and ill-motivated allegation”.

Bishop Aloysius Paul D'Souza called it “a victory of the prevailing truth against those who intend to maliciously defame the goodness of the Church. God is with us.”

Melwyn P. Noronha, president of the Catholic Lawyers Guild of Mangalore and who headed the legal proceedings, said “the national weekly has investigated into the issue and put an end to the baseless rumors of a few biased individual anti-Christians.”

Mysuru, Mar 24:m who returned from foreign travel and flouted home quarantine guidelines has been arrested in Mysuru on Monday. 

The man, who returned from Australia, had a seal on his hand but was roaming around the city. 

According to police, he was supposed to be under home quarantine till April 6. V V Puram Police took him into custody.

Mangaluru, May 2:  Dakshina Kannada district administration has taken steps to quarantine people returning after having lost their jobs in foreign countries.

Marriages hall, general halls and hostels are being identified for the purpose, a source said.

Official said that Coronavirus scare also has forced many people from foreign countries, those in including Gulf countries, to return to their native villages.

The Gulf countries are also sending back those staying illegally there. 

Once the flight services resume, thousands of people are likely to return to the country.

Meanwhile, DK deputy commissioner Karnataka held a video conference with Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa.

Bengaluru, Feb 16: The Central Crime Branch has recovered blank firearms from Saddaguntepalya Police Station limits.

As of now, two persons have been arrested in this regard. They have been identified as Mohd Junaid and Mohd Tabrez. The officials have recovered 28 blank firearms and 76 blank bullets.

"The two accused -- without having any license -- were in possession of these huge number of weapons," Sandeep Patil, Joint CP, Crime, told media.

As per the preliminary investigation, there has been no record of such cases in Bengaluru. "But we are verifying if other states have any (such) case," added the Joint CP

According to investigations, it was noted that the weapons were purchased from Mumbai at an estimated cost of Rs 1 lakh per weapon.

Further investigation is currently underway.
