Navy chopper catches fire at Mangalore Airport, no-one hurt

Mangalore, December 12: In what could have been a major catastrophe, as many as 13 Navy crew had a miraculous escape after a fire broke out aboard the Navy Sea King helicopter as it was taxiing for take-off at Mangalore Airport on Monday morning.

The crew included six high level officers of the Navy.

The incident occurred five minutes after the chopper landed at the airport. However, the fire was doused immediately and the crew evacuated safely.

The Southern Naval Command-based helicopter had arrived in Mangalore from Kochi on its way to Mumbai on a routine flying sortie.

In a statement issued to the media, Mangalore Airport Director M R Vasudeva Rao has said that the helicopter landed at the Airport for refueling at 10:45 am.

“When the chopper was on parking stand-1, a smoke was observed near the Rotors and was report to ATC Tower by CISF personnel at 10:56 am”, he said.

Mr Rao said that the rescue and firefighting services belonging to Airport Authority of India was immediately altered by Air Traffic Control and the fire which was developed, subsequently was put off by them using foam extinguishing media in concurrence with Air crew at 11: 00 am.

All the 13 personnel on board the helicopter were evacuated to safety, he said.

Carcass of over 50 monkeys found near Belathangady; poisoning suspected

Belthangady, May 15: Carcases of more than 50 monkeys were found at Bandaru gram panchayat in the taluka here on Friday.

The carcasses were found on the Kundalapalke-Padmunja road in Bandar village. Locals had seen the monkeys’ carcasses night of Thursday and informed authorities about it.

Kaniyuru Health Centre’s medical assistant Swatantra Rao and Ujire health Centre’s Medical Officer, Forest Department staff, veterinarians and local Panchayat officials visited the spot.

Women lead massive protest demanding liquor ban in Karnataka

Bagalkote, Jan 27: The bank of Krishna River in front of Sangamantha Temple at Koodalasangama in Karnataka today witnessed the launch of women’s indefinite strike demanding liquor ban in the state.

Thousands of women from various parts of Karnataka have taken part in the strike being organised under the banner of 'Karnataka Madya Nisheda Andolana'.

The strike was launched to draw the attention of the state government to press for a complete ban on the sale of liquor across the state.

About 50 various organizations and religious pontiffs have extended their support for the strike. Food is being cooked on the bank of the river for the agitating women.

The women from Chikmagalur, Tumakuru, Raichur and Ballari districts are taking part in it.

Karnataka studying in-depth consequences of corona lockdown norms relaxation

Bengaluru, Apr 12: The Karnataka government is studying in-depth the consequences of the possible relaxation of lockdown norms after April 14 and plans to come out with a clear roadmap in a day or two, a key Minister said on Sunday.

Medical Education Minister K Sudhakar, who is in charge of all matters related to COVID-19, told PTI that the pros and cons of any decision that the Government intends to take is being looked at in detail.

"We are trying to understand how the situation would be of any action that we intend to take. We need to foresee the repercussions or results of our action. That we have to keep it in mind and make a decision. After-effects of the decisions we intend to take, that is more important, he said. You will have clarity (on the possible relaxation of lockdown norms) in a day or two. For everything (government decisions) we will give the reasoning for what action we would like to take; with the reasoning, we will give a decision," the Minister added.

Government sources said some relaxation in liquor sales, stopped during the lock-down period, is likely after the ongoing 21-day national clampdown ends on April 14. Twelve of the state's 30 districts remain free from the COVID-19 pandemic. Till Saturday, Karnataka reported 215 COVID-19 positive cases, including six deaths and 39 discharges.
