St. Aloysius College to hold national level seminar on 'Media and Environment' in Jan

Mangalore, December 13: The department of Mass Communication and Media Studies (MCMS) of St. Aloysius College, Mangalore will be holding its second national level seminar on January 20 and 21, 2012, under the theme 'Media and Environment'.

A press release issued by Laxmi Shenoy, Convenor of the event states that the conference, clubbed with media fiesta, offers two sessions spanning over two days filled with plenaries, presentations and intense discussions on media and environmental issues in India.

The media fiesta will offer inter-collegiate level competitions including press v/s media, photography contest, radio jingle composition etc.

The organisers have also invited senior and junior teachers / scholars and graduate / post-graduate students to participate and present their research at the seminar.

Session 1 - January 20, 2011 - Teachers / Scholars Paper Presentations

Session 2 - January 21, 2011 - Student Paper Presentations

Topic areas of particular interest to the conference are:

· Media Hyperbole While Addressing Environmental Issues

· Media and Reporting Environmental Issues: Towards a better reporting framework

· Media bias related to environmental issues

· Using media to protect the environment

· Public Environmental Awareness and Education

· India's Media Coverage of Environmental Issues

· Media Role and Influence on Environmental Politics

· Using Social Media Strategies to Increase Environmental Awareness

· Social implications of environmental communication

Interested scholars and students are requested to send in their abstracts (not exceeding 500 words) which will be blind-reviewed by a panel following which authors of chosen abstracts will be requested for a full paper for publication in the proceedings and/or presentation at the seminar.

Format for Abstracts

· MS Word document leaving a margin of 30mm on all sides, left justified, Times New Roman font size 12 pt and regular line spacing.

· The first page: authors name, designation, institutional/professional/other affiliation(s) and full contact details (including telephone number and email id)

· Second page: title in bold, keywords being strung together in the dialogue, the session theme under which submitted followed by the abstract.

The last date for receipt of full papers is December 31, 2011.

Yadgir, Jan 21: A bag was found abandoned at the Yadgir Bus Stand on Tuesday morning that left the commuters in panic.

After receiving the information, a police team, along with a sniffer dog, rushed to the spot. When the bag was checked, the police found clothes and cash in it.

It is stated that a passenger might have left the bag in a hurry to catch the bus.

Mysuru, Feb 14: Two weeks after her engagement with another boy, a 20-year-old girl who was in love with a boy, committed suicide at her residence in Nanjangud on Wednesday.

Meghana's parents have accused her lover Manikanta of Hemmargala of abetting her suicide. The girl's father in his complaint has claimed that Manikanta threatened to send their photos to her fiance following which she took the extreme step. He has also claimed his daughter was molested by Manikanta two years ago.

Manikanta who is on the run has been booked for rape and abetting suicide following the complaint.

Since the girl was from the SC community, cops have also slapped cases under Atrocities (Prevention) Act against Manikanta. Nanjangud sub-division DSP Prabhkar Rao Shinde will investigate the case as charges have been made under provisions of the act.

Bengaluru, Jul 5: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has asked officials to ensure that all necessary arrangements for COVID-19 patients must be carried out efficiently and transparently, Medical Education Minister Dr K Sudhakar said.

"Karnataka is in a better position due to the efforts and hard work of ministers, doctors, officials and all staff. The cases have increased in Bengaluru and some other districts in last few days due to various reasons. We all have to work hard and contain the spread of virus," Dr Sudhakar told media on Saturday.

"Responsibilities related to policy formulation, preparation of guidelines, communication to media and management of war room have been assigned to me. Deputy Chief Minister Ashwath Narayan has been given the responsibility of managing COVID-19 care centres and Revenue Minister R Ashoka and Chief Minister's political secretary Vishvanath have been given the responsibility of managing private hospitals. The Chief Minister has instructed all of us to work in synergy," he said.

Dr Sudhakar said the matter of imposing lockdown in the state again was discussed in the task force meeting. "I and Deputy Chief Minister suggested that lockdown is not necessary at this stage. The Chief Minister will take a decision on this matter," he added.

Home Minister Basavar Bommai, Health Minister B Sriramulu, Revenue Minister R Ashoka and senior officials were present in the task force meeting.
