City advocates mourn the demise of Justice VG Sabhahit

Mangalore, December 13: A condolence meet was organized to mourn the demise of Karnataka High Court Judge Justice VG Sabhahit, at Court Hall in the city on Tuesday.

Speaking on the occasion Mangalore Bar Council president and senior advocate, SP Chengappa said that Justice Sabhahit was an honest and straight-forward judge, who has set a model for the young generation.

RN Shettigar, Narasimha Murthy, Nagalinge Gowda and Manjunath were present among others.

Justice VG Sabhahit, a judge in the Karnataka high court, died due to a heart attack on the high court premises on Monday. He suffered the heart attack in his chambers at 4.45pm. This is the first time a judge has died in his chambers.

The high court in Bangalore and the circuit benches at Dharwad and Gulbarga, as a mark of respect, remained closed on Tuesday.

Justice Sabhahit was born on November 26, 1955. He enrolled as an advocate on July 1979 and practised in the high court.He joined the Karnataka Judicial Service as district judge on April 18, 1988. He was promoted to the cadre of district judgeon November 1995.

He was appointed additional judge of the high court on February 2000, and as permanent judge on June 11, 2001.

Udupi, May 23: Five more persons tested positive for coronavirus in the coastal district of Udupi today. 

They include three men aged 37, 55, 31 and two women aged 48 and 34. 

Among them four are returnees from Mumbai and one is foreign returnee.

With this the total number of covid-19 cases in the district rose to 55.

Bengaluru, Jul 28: In view of the COVID-19 pandemic, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Monday advised people not to visit temples, mosques and other places of worship during the coming festival season.

"COVID-19 is now spreading rapidly in Karnataka, especially in Bengaluru. The festival season is starting with Varamahalakshmi festival on July 31, followed by Bakrid, Raksha Bandhan, Janmashtami, Gowri Ganesha, Moharram and then Onam. This festival season is the riskiest time for the spread of the coronavirus. Therefore, please STRICTLY follow the rules in order to stay safe. Do not visit religious places even if they are officially declared open," a notification from BBMP said.

In the context of Bakrid, unauthorised animal sacrifice (slaughtering) was prohibited in BBMP limits on roads and sidewalks, religious places, school and college premises, playgrounds and other public areas, as per the Karnataka Municipal Corporation Act of 1976.

"Unauthorised animal sacrifice (slaughtering) is a punishable offence under Section 3 of the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959 and Rules and the Amendment Act 1975, which provides for a maximum penalty of six months or Rs 1000, or both. According to the Karnataka Prevention of Animal Sacrifices Act 1959, slaughter-worthy animals can only be slaughtered in official slaughterhouses," the notification said.

Bengaluru, Jul 16: Karnataka chief minister BS Yediyurappa on Tuesday said he would request Prime Minister Narendra Modi for more relaxations, as he made it clear that Covid-19 lockdown measures were not required in the state anymore.

"The lockdown is not required for Karnataka, we will request for more relaxations," Yediyurappa said in response to a question about video conferencing with the Prime Minister.

Speaking to reporters here, he said, "I will request him (PM) to make way for- people to lead a normal life and for the improvement in the economic situation."

Several services such as metro, theatres, gyms, swimming pools, bars among others continue to remain restricted under unlock 1.0 that is currently in place.

Modi is scheduled to hold a video conference with chief ministers of various states on Tuesday and Wednesday. Yediyurappa is scheduled to take part in the video conferencing on Wednesday.

The chief minister, who took part in the special pooja organised at Shankar Math here to pray for the control of Covid-19, said, the government was making all efforts to control the spread.

"We are taking strong measures and all of us should fight this together," he said, as he highlighted that the government has released the financial assistance amount that was announced for farmers, and was ensuring that it reaches them.
