Asian Powerlifting Championship: Medalists get a rousing reception in city

Mangalore, December 14: The promising powerlifters from Dakshina Kannada, who won medals at recently held Asian Powerlifting Championship at Kobe City in Japan, received a rapturous reception upon their arrival in the city on Wednesday morning.

Even though the crowd gathered at the Mangalore Central Railway Station was not huge but it did enough to give a warm welcome to the players. The fans who gathered at the station were seen dancing to the beats of drums.

Mangalore Mayor Praveen Anchan was among the local representatives who extended a warm welcome to the five triumphant athletes.

Among the 18 medalists from Karnataka, who performed brilliantly in the international sports event held from December 5 to 9, many hail from Dakshina Kannada district.

Prasad Shetty, a student of St. Aloysius Pre University College, and son of K. Chandrahas Shetty and Shashi Shetty couple of Mangalore has won one gold and two bronze medals. Neha, a first BCom student of SDM College, Ujire, bagged two bronzes in the sub-junior category while M. Vinutha, a second BCom student from same college, got four silver medals in senior category.

Vinay Kanchan won three silvers and one bronze in Master I category, while Anand N. got a silver medal in senior category. M Maheshwariah bagged three gold medals and one silver medal. Sathish Kumar Kudroli was the coach of the Indian team and led the delegation to Japan.

The players and coach were taken on a procession from Railway station to Balanjaneya Gymnasium.

Madikeri, Jan 16: Income Tax Department officials on Thursday raided the residence of Kannada actress Rashmika Mandanna at Virajpet in Kodagu District on Thursday.

About 10 IT officials arrived at the residence on Thursday at about 1930 hrs and started searching. The officials have been busy conducting the raid for more than three hours now.

I-T sources said that the search and seizure operations were conducted on suspicion that Rashmika Mandanna had evaded taxes.

Mandanna, 23, is a leading heroine and has acted in several Kannada and Telugu films over the last four years. Her most recent film Sarileru Neekevvaru opposite Mahesh Babu is in the theatres now.

She made her debut in Sandalwood with the film Kirik Party, which was a huge success at the box office. She went on to act in several Kannada and Telugu films in the last two years and has become a huge success in the industry. She has acted in Dear Comrade, Sarileru Neekevvaru, Chalo, Geeta Govindam, Chamak, Yajamana, Anjani Putra and Vritra.

She is currently working in the film Pogaru alongside Dhruva Sarja. She has acted in nine movies in the last two years and has also signed several advertising contracts.

Udupi, Mar 31: Six people have committed suicide since liquor shops were shut down during a lockdown here to break the chain of the novel coronavirus.

Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesha said in a statement here, "After continuous suicides out of depression over not being able to buy alcohol, the district administration decided to hold counselling sessions to such people.

"The district administration has appointed a team of Doctors for counselling. Anyone who needs counselling can call 1077 toll-free number," he added.

Mangaluru, Apr 15: Dakshina Kannada Deputy Commissioner Sindhu Rupesh has written to her counterpart at Valsad to make food and accommodation arrangements for two persons from Puttur who are stranded at Ambergaon village in their district due to lockdown.

Valsad is a district near Gujarat-Maharashtra border.

Ashik Hussain and Mohammed Takeen Maril, have been stuck at the RTO check post of Ambergaon for the last 21 days. The duo have been staying in their car, without proper accommodation or food.
