Owning good breed dogs is a recently developed trend in our city. A glimpse of this craze can be witnessed at the dog show organized every year in Mangalore, where several dog owners participate and flaunt their dogs. It is exciting to see the well breed dogs with their fascinating tricks, impressing people and making their owners proud. But, have you ever wondered about those animals that lie on the roads in huge numbers or the dogs that filled the streets some years back? Those animals that do not have the privilege of having owners spend on them or more importantly having owners at all?

Recently I learnt about an NGO called the Animal Care Trust, an organization that looks after animals who are not in the best place in their life. When I visited the place and looked at what they have done, I was amazed.

Animal Care Trust recognized by the Animal Welfare Board of India and situated at Shaktinagar is an organization that caters to the needs of animals such as dogs, cats, birds, monkeys, turtles and cattle. It was started in the year 2000 with the idea of helping the helpless, diseased and vulnerable animals.

“This organization was started over a course of three years by a group of animal lovers. In the initial days, we (the founders) looked after the diseased and injured animals at our homes. Gradually, the number grew and we realized the need for having a separate shelter to look after these animals. Thus the shelter came into being”, says Suma Nayak, Honorary Trustee and Treasurer at the Animal Care Trust.

Presently Animal Care Trust takes up several programmes such as Animal Birth Control, Rescue Operations, Anti-Rabies Vaccination Programme, Animal Surgeries, Animal Adoption and Human Education Programmes.

Animal birth control and Vaccination programme is successfully carried out by the Animal Care Trust in co operation with the Mangalore City Corporation. Animals from different localities are picked up by the team and brought to the trust. They are then vaccinated and kept till they recover. Once they are good to be on their own, they are left back to their localities.

To spread awareness among the people about the need of taking care of animals, the Animal Care Trust takes up various programmes including Education Programmes for children and college students. Children from different schools are educated towards showing compassion for animals and treating them well. It also informs people about animal rights, animal adoptions and prevention of cruelty to animals.

The trust also goes out at any part of the day to rescue injured and helpless animals. When they get to know of any injured animal, the team is sent out to get the animal to the shelter. It is then treated at the Animal Care Trust and kept here till the animals get better. Dr. Laxmi, a full time Veterinarian for Animal Care Trust puts in her best to see that the animals are treated well and she strives for a full recovery. The animals that have a full recovery are taken back, while those that are crippled or injured to an extent that they cannot live without assistance find a permanent home at Animal Care Trust.

Animal adoption is also an important part of Animal Care Trust activities. Animal lovers who would like to adopt dogs, cats or other animals can obtain the animal of their choice at this place. The trust also provides people an opportunity to lend a hand, although they may not be able to do it in person. Those who would like to contribute towards the welfare of these animals can do so, by sponsoring for them. An animal can be sponsored on a monthly or a yearly basis wherein the animals feed and medicines will be looked after.

A visit to the place will give you a glimpse of the dedication these members have towards this cause. The team apart from their daily work spends a lot of time, every Sunday and public holiday to look after these animals. Apart from the trustees there are also volunteers who after having visited the place once have continued visiting it, to contribute their share towards this noble effort.

Amidst the hustle and bustle of the day, I spoke to a worker at the place who was glad to narrate his daily chores at the place. Cheerfully he speaks of his work, saying he is glad to be a part of this trust that allows dejected animals to find hope.

Bengaluru, Apr 28: Former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday demanded that the Karnataka government announce a "special package" for unorganised sector workers, street vendors and autorickshaw drivers, among others, all daily wagers whose lives are affected by the COVID-19 lockdown. "..a special package needs to be announced to this section of people, this is the demand," Siddaramaiah, who is also Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, told reporters here.

Alleging that the government has failed to control the spread of coronavirus, he said it is the government's responsibility to take care of the basic needs of those from the unorganised sector, whose lives have been impacted by the lockdown. "It is the duty of the government and they should do it immediately. The package should also be announced. I will hold discussions with leaders of other opposition parties like JD(S), CPI, CPI(M) and BSP in this regard and also on trouble faced by farmers," he added. Alleging discrimination in supply of food packets and ration kits, Siddaramaiah said it was being supplied properly only in constituencies represented by BJP legislators.

"Politics is being played out in supply of food materials to the needy, keeping corporation elections in mind.... We don't want to do politics at this point in time as there is lockdown. If things continue to be the same after the lockdown ends, we will protest on the streets," he said.

Siddaramaiah on Tuesday interacted with representatives of auto rickshaw and cab drivers, street vendors, barbers, unorganised workers organisations, among others, to understand the difficulties faced by them during the lockdown and to know whether help from the government has reached them. He said most of them don't have work and it has become difficult for them to lead their normal lives.

They raised several issues like auto and cab drivers being unable to pay road tax and EMI, he said, adding that he would write a detailed letter to the Chief Minister in this regard The former Chief Minister pointed out that there is about 21 lakh registered organised workers, 1.32 crore lakh unorganised workers and also agriculture labourers in the state.

"Among organised workers only 12.5 of the 21 lakh are said to be getting Rs 2000, that too from the Employees Welfare Fund, while others could not get any money, citing reasons like they have not renewed it," he said.

On the other hand, unorganised sector workers don't get money and were also not getting proper food or ration kits, he alleged Though the labour department claimed that it was supplying one lakh food packets and 1.5 lakh ration kits, as also corporations, there were leakages and it was not reaching the beneficiaries properly, he said.

Benglauru, May 17: A garment company manager jumped to death from his third-floor house on Saturday, four days after having killed his wife and wrapping her body in a blanket.

Manish Kumar, 42, gave a relative and neighbours frightening moments before committing suicide at AECS Layout, Kudlu Gate, Southeast Bengaluru. The relative had come over after Kumar’s brother called him from Delhi, saying he had stopped responding to phone calls.

The relative, who lives in Hongasandra, arrived at Kumar’s house around noon. He knocked on the door which was bolted from the inside but didn’t get a response. When he asked the neighbours, they said they didn’t have a clue. The relative and the neighbours decided to break the door open.

But as they entered the house, they got the shock of their lives. Kumar was slitting his wrist with a blade. He then ran into the bathroom and locked himself in. They followed him and asked him to open the door. But he ignored them. They had to break open the bathroom door, too. By this time, Kumar had slashed his hands, chest and other parts of the body. Waving the blade at them, he asked them to stay away.

Even the relative and the neighbours pleaded with him to drop the blade, he ran out and jumped off the building. He was taken to a hospital but it was too late.

A bigger shock awaited them. They felt a foul smell emanating from the house. When they went in, they found the decomposed body of Kumar’s wife, Sandhya, 35, wrapped in a blanket. They called the cops.

Police found a death note purportedly written by Kumar on May 12. “We suspect he killed her on that day,” said a police officer investigating the case.

Police said the death note specifies what made Kumar kill his wife and commit suicide. Sandhya suspected him of having an affair since he regularly chatted up some bar dancers he had met in Gurgaon and Delhi. She accessed his phone and saw the calls and the WhatsApp messages he had sent them. The issue rocked their marital life and they often fought over it. He then decided to kill his wife and commit suicide, as per the death note.

Police said Kumar appeared to have spent the last four days at home, with his wife’s body wrapped in the blanket. “We don’t know whether he tried to dispose of the body or didn’t want to see it,” the officer said. Police couldn’t determine how he killed her and are waiting for the post-mortem report.

Joshi Srinath Mahadev, DCP (Southeast), said the couple hailed from Bihar. “We are waiting for Sandhya’s relatives to arrive in Bengaluru. A case of murder and suicide has been registered at the Parappana Agrahara police station.” Another officer said the couple had a love marriage.

Bengaluru, Feb 4: The CBI has booked Karnataka cadre senior IPS officers Hemant Nimbalkar and Ajay Hilori along with eight others in connection with Rs 4,000-crore I-Monetary Advisory (IMA) scam in which gullible investors were allegedly cheated in the name of Islamic banking, officials said on Tuesday.

The move came after the CBI received an approval from the Karnataka government to proceed with investigation into alleged role of 1998-batch IPS officer Nimbalkar and 2008-batch IPS officer Hilori, they said.

Along with the two officers, the agency has also named the company IMA, its founder Mansoor Khan and others in the case.

The CBI had approached the state government seeking permission to proceed against the two officers who are in senior positions in the Karnataka Police and allegedly helped IMA founder Masoor Khan, they said.
