Bangalore, December 17: There was chaos in the legislative assembly on Friday with Congress and BJP MLAs from Dakshina Kannada district locked in a heated argument over 'love jihad', a term extensively used by Sangh Parivar to define Muslim youth allegedly loving Hindu girls to convert them to Islam.

At least three influential MLAs from Dakshina Kannada district expressed concern about 'love jihad' and sought government's immediate action to prevent Hindu girls being converted into Islam by Muslim youth after winning their hearts.

However, Bantwal MLA B Ramanath Rai said that BJP MLAs deliberately raising the baseless and sensational issues to disrupt communal harmony in Dakshina Kannada.

Raising the issue during zero hour, Puttur MAL Mallika Prasad accused the government of not taking steps to prevent Hindu girls being attracted towards Muslims and Islam, especially in Dakshina Kannada district. She accused the Muslim youths of converting Hindu girls after winning their heart.

Presenting statistics without any documents or sources, she said that as many as 84 Hindu girls have been missing and 69 of them have confessed to have been lured by Muslim youths who professed love. The worrying factor is that some girls are pushed into the flesh trade, she added.

Sullia MLA S Angara alleged that police booked a case against an elected representative in his assembly constituency when he went to complain about a youth who had eloped with a girl.

Mangalore South MLA Yogish Bhat, who is also the Deputy Speaker of Legislative Assembly, said, this was a serious matter. He said that this year 64 girls went missing in Udupi district and only 42 have been traced.

Bhat also said that police have been threatening those who inform them about alleged conversion. “The government should take immediate action to stop this”, he said.

Terming 'love jihad' a lie Ramanath Rai expressed concern over moral policing "A few years ago, members of the minority community were beaten by Sangh Parivar cadres for transporting cattle. In some instances, Sangh Parivar have members indulged in moral policing. When there are police and the law and order system, where's the need for moral policing?" asked Rai. Mulky-Moodbidri MLA Abhay Chandra Jain too supported Mr Rai.

However, House leader S Suresh Kumar, upholding the argument of BJP MLAs from Dakshina Kannada said that 'love jihad' is a dangerous trend. "The government will take appropriate action and ask the home department to take measures to curtail it," he said.

Bengaluru, Jan 21: Braving the biting cold, chief minister BS Yediyurappa took time out of his busy schedule to go around Davos on Monday.

Clad in a long coat over a suit, scarf and leather gloves, Yediyurappa, with secretary S Selvakumar in tow, took in the sights of well-laid bylanes, quaint houses and snow-covered pine trees. He also rode a cable car at Persenn.

A cook from Andhra Pradesh, who works at an Indian restaurant in Davos, served the CM shavige uppittu and khara pongal for breakfast. Yediyurappa had chapatis and rice for dinner.

Meanwhile, Karnataka is likely to have a ‘Centre for Internet of Ethical Things’, perhaps, the world’s first, which will seek to ensure ethical practices in trade and businesses, besides addressing issues like misuse of artificial intelligence, a concern that has been bothering business leaders across the globe.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Yediyurappa signed an informal agreement with Murat Sonmez, the forum’s managing director, on Monday. "Investors around the globe are worried about unethical practices in business and a centre is the need of the hour," Sonmez was quoted as saying in a press release. "If the Karnataka government is serious about securing investment, it should set up the centre immediately."

Yediyurappa immediately responded to the suggestion by prompting Sonmez to write down an informal agreement on a sheet of paper which both signed. "This centre will go a long way in Karnataka’s history of industrial development," Sonmez was quoted as saying in a release by the Karnataka delegation.

At the inauguration of Karnataka’s pavilion, Yediyurappa promised all support to investors. "We are happy to be here and look forward to engage you on various development agenda," he said adding that he was keen to partner on certain strategic research that can help Karnataka become a major player on the global stage. "With Karnataka emerging as a leading industrial state in India, we can make it a major player on the global stage," he said.

Industries minister Jagadish Shettar, chief secretary TM Vijaya Bhasker and industries secretary Ramana Reddy were also signatories to the informal agreement.

Bengaluru, Jun 11: Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Thursday allowed the Opposition Congress party's newly elected state president DK Shivakumar to have a formal swearing-in function.

He told media, “I have spoken to Shivakumar and informed him to conduct the event after taking precautionary measures against the spread of the COVID-19 disease”.

The move came after the state government received flak from the main Opposition Congress leaders, for refusing to permit the newly elected State Congress president to have a formal swearing-in function take reigns from his predecessor Dinesh Gundu Rao.

Bengaluru, May 26: Ministers of the central government or state governments or officers on their official duty, who are travelling across states, will be exempted from requirements of quarantine, the Karnataka government said on Monday.

The state government issued an addendum to Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for inter-state passengers.

"Any person who gets a negative COVID test certificate (from ICMR approved lab) which is not more than two days old from the date of journey will be exempted from the requirement of institutional quarantine," read the addendum.

The state government has laid down new norms for those coming from other states (including those coming by domestic air flights).

Passengers coming from 'high prevalence states' (Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh) would be required to undergo a seven-day "institutional quarantine", which will be followed by home quarantine.

The new norms also said that home quarantine of 14 days would be necessary for the passengers coming from other states.
