Mangalore, December 21: In a dramatic twist in the case of attack of on Sullia police station, 10 police personnel have been booked on charges of 'atrocity' on accused.

The development comes after a delegation of BJP leaders met Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Pratap Reddy urging to take action against the police personnel, who allegedly beat the accused in the custody following the incident of December 14, when members of rightwing group had pelted stones at police station.

Sources said that a case has been registered by Sullia Circle Police Inspector Tharanath against Additional Superintendent of Police, Prabhakar, then-Sullia Sub-Inspector Ravikumar, who has been now transferred to Mangalore), Kadaba SI, Paulpriya Kumar, Puttur Rural SI Anand, Kadaba police constable Palanivelu, police jeep driver Kuriakose, Sullia constable Ramesh and three others. The FIR has been submitted to Sullia court.

The case was registered on the basis of a complaint lodged by Sullia town BJP Shakti Kendra leader and Land Bank President PK Umesh. He was one of the main accused in the attack on police station.

Bowing to the pressure, Dakshina Kannada Superintended of Police Laburam on Tuesday paid a visit to the spot before a counter case was registered against police personnel.

It can be mentioned here that RSS leader Kalladka Prabhakar on December 16 in a protest against alleged police atrocity in Sullia warned the police of dire consequence if 'they continued to harass Hindus'.

Back ground

On December 14, a group of people belonging to a rightwing group waylaid a car in which two men and two women were reportedly traveling to Madikeri.

Iqbal, Hameed from Uppala and Prabharani and Shobha from Jharkhand were traveling in the vehicle.

The car was stopped at Jalsoor Gate by the group of over 200 people led by Jalsoor GP member Sanath Adkar. After questioning the couples, the group handed them over to the police in the night.

The police retained men for interrogation and sent the women to remand home.

Later, altercation broke out between ZP Member Naveen Rai and the police as the cops questioned the public's right to stop a vehicle and question the individuals.

This led to BJP members shouting out slogans against the police in front of the Station. Stones were pelted at the station. Police had to wield lathi to get situation under control.

The very next day police had arrested 15 persons including P K Umesh, Dinesh Kumar, Guruprasad, Kiran Kumar and town panchayat vice president Prakash Hegde. They were later released on bail.

Bengaluru, Feb 18:  A fan of Kannada film star Darshan smashed the face of a police constable with a boulder when the latter asked him to come in the queue to a party to celebrate the star’s birthday.

The incident happened past midnight on February 15 near the residence of the film star where his birthday was being celebrated.

The injured police constable has been identified as Devaraj, attached to the Jnana Bharathi police station.

The film star’s managers had not made arrangements to handle a huge crowd that gathered near his residence and police had a tough time controlling the crowd.

Constable Devaraj was deputed to duty at the party and tried to get the crowd to fall in line.

As the police carried out a mild lathi-charge to control the crowd, a fan of Darshan came up with a boulder in his hand and smashed the face of the constable Devaraj from very close distance. The constable collapsed on the spot and the attacker ran away.

The impact was such that Devaraj’s nose was fractured and he sustained an eye injury. He was admitted to a private hospital and his condition is said to be serious.

The R R Nagar police have registered a case under IPC sections 353 and 352. The cops have launched a hunt for the accused and they are obtaining CCTV footage from the spot.

A complaint is being registered against the organisers of the event and an investigation is on. Several neighbours of Darshan have also complained to the police about the chaos on February 15.

Bengaluru, Feb 19: A public interest litigation (PIL) has been filed in the Karnataka High Court, seeking a stay on Anand Singh functioning as Minister of Forests, Environment and Ecology contending that there are criminal cases filed against him by the Ministry.

"A stay be granted prohibiting Anand Singh from functioning as the Cabinet Minister for the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology. Any other order that the Honourable Court may deem fit in the interest of justice and equity," the PIL prays.

The petition, filed by advocate Vijay Kumar, said that the Chief Minister has allocated the portfolio of the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology to Singh without considering the fact that there are several criminal faces filed against him by the Ministry.

It said that the allocation of the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology portfolio to Singh is in the conflict of interest.

"The holding of the post of Cabinet minister for the Ministry of Forests, Environment and Ecology is against public interest and completely in conflict of interest as he has business for which the subject Ministry is the overseeing authority and further he will also have access to the case files which again is in conflict of interest," the PIL said.

PIL adds that "it is pertinent and absolutely necessary" to deny the incumbent from accessing files related to his cases and from taking any decisions which may provide him with pecuniary benefits through his businesses.
