Mangalore, December 25: Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda said that the contribution of undivided Dakshina Kannada district towards the education, health and banking sector of the country is remarkably immense.

He was speaking after inaugurating Srinivas Institute of Medical Science and Research Centre and Srinivas Hospital built under the aegis of A Sharma Rao Foundation at Suratkal, on the outskirts of the city on Sunday.

“This is the seventh medical college in the district. No other state in India has so many medical institutions,” he said.

Terming the Dhakshina Kannada as the 'Ganga of knowledge', he said this coastal district contributed to the overall development of the country without depending on any government. He also recalled the outstanding achievement of individuals from this district like TMA Pai, Shivram Karant and others.

Congratulating A Sharma Rao Foundation for establishing a new institutions in the district, he said such institutions contribute to the development of the country, as the Government alone cannot take all the responsibilities in the modern days amidst the rapid population growth.

The CM also called upon the educational intuitions to impart quality education.

Minister for Higher Education and Religious Endowment, VS Acharya, in his address pointed out that Karnataka has secured a special position in the education sector in the entire country.

Shri Vishweshwara Theerta Swamiji, the chief pontiff of Pejawara Mutt, speaking on the occasion said: “For a child's growth both father and mother are important. Similarly for the growth of a Nation, the Government and Society should play the role of father and mother”

Calling upon the doctors to show sympathy towards patients, he said a doctor has the capability of protecting or torturing a human being.

Dr. Sriprakash KS, Vice Chancellor, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore said that the motto of the institution should be to reach the common people.

CA A. Raghavendra Rao, President of A. Sharma Rao Foundation presided over the function. Srinivas Rao, Vice President of the Foundation, welcomed the gathering.

Krishna J Palemar, DK District Minister and, Vinay Kumar Sorake, Secretary, AICC, Dr. CV Raghuveer, Dean and Medical Director, Cap Ganesh Karnik, MLC were present among others.

Mangaluru, May 17: A team of staff and students from the Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, NMAM Institute of Technology, Nitte, have designed and developed a simple and cost-effective touch-less hand sanitiser dispenser kit at Research and Innovation Centre, Nitte.

According to a release here on Sunday, NITTE said that the most effective medicine for Covid-19 is social distancing, frequent use of sanitiser, and washing hands regularly. In work areas, many people sharing common sanitiser might lead to issues.

The developed product dispenses sanitiser upon sensing the presence of the hand. The product has features like automatic hand detection, indication for power, and sanitiser quantity in the system.

Mangaluru, Jun 15: A 69-year-old man was murdered by his two sons at Muggaguthu in Karaya village under the limits of Uppinangady police station in Dakshina Kannada district. 

According to Police, accused Monappa Poojary (34) and Naveen (28) assaulted Dharnappa Poojary with sickle and wooden logs on Sunday night, leading to his on-the-spot death.

A family discord led to the murder, police said, adding that a case has been registered at Uppinangady police station and investigation was in progress.

Bengaluru, Feb 2: A woman from Bengaluru lost Rs 2.8 lakh to a 'foreign friend' who promised her gifts, including gold jewellery and foreign currency.

Priya, 37, of Banashankari III Stage, told police a man named Bright Wills from England befriended her on social media in December 2019.

On December 20, Wills said he would send gold ornaments and some British pounds as gifts to celebrate their friendship and took her postal address.

“A woman claiming to be an official from the customs office, Delhi, called me on December 21. She told me there was a courier from England in my name and I should pay Rs 75,000 tow ards customs clearance. I believed her and transferred Rs 75,000 to a bank account number provided by her. On December 23, another woman called and said gold ornaments had been sent to me by courier and I had to pay Rs 2.1 lakh towards the paperwork. I transferred the money to another account number mentioned by her," Priya told police.

"On December 25, I received an email which said I should make a surety deposit of Rs 4.3 lakh within 48 hours or else the courier would be sent back to its original destination. I realised I had been cheated by Wills and others. Till now, I have paid Rs 2.8 lakh to them," she claimed.
