Bodies of four drowned BIT students found

Mangalore, December 26: A day after four students of a prestigious engineering college, drowned in river Netravati at Jalakada Katte near Boliar village in Bantwal talkuk, their bodies were fished out on Monday.

The first body was recovered at around 9:00 am, when the fire service personnel resumed the search operation with the help of localites. The remaining three bodies were also found in the same spot within two hours, sources said.

Meanwhile, the Bearys Institute of Technology, which lost its four students, has declared holiday on Monday, sources said.

It is said that despite the warning of local people, the students on Sunday afternoon had entered the waters at Jalakada Katte, where two girls had drowned a few years ago.

The deceased are Mohammed Safwan, son of Usman from Kannur, Shifaz, son of K Arif from Kasargdo, Subhan, son of Najma Shaikh from Thalassery and Rinaz Nazee, son of Shibaz Nazeer from Malappuram. Another student who was rescued by Siddeeq, a localite, within minutes after he drowned, has been recovering at a private hospital in Mangalore.

The mishap had taken place when 12 students from Bearys Institute of Technology, had gone to the river on a pleasure trip to enjoy Christmas holiday.

Mangaluru, Aug 2: Former Minister and Mangaluru City MLA U T Khader has gone into self-quarantine after former MLC Ivan D’Souza tested positive for coronavirus. 

Mr D’Souza had met Mr Khader and many other Congress leaders a day before receiving his throat swab test results. 

Mr Khader announced on twitter: “Have gone into self-quarantine with immediate effect after receiving the news about #Covid_19 positive test of Former MLC Ivan D’Souza & his wife Dr Kavitha. Being COVID Incharge DK District taskforce committee, I am one among Ivan's primary contact.”

“I am going to discharge my duties from home for the next few days. You can reach out over phone at any point of time. I appeal to all my colleagues and friends who may have come in contact with us in the last few days to get tested for #Covid_19” he tweeted.

Mangaluru, Feb 11: Renowned journalist and winner of Magsaysay award, P Sainath will be in Mangaluru on February 14 & 15 at St. Aloysius College (Autonomous). He will speak on the topic ‘Indian democracy in post liberalisation and post truth era’.

P Sainath’s two-day visit to St. Aloysius College will also feature a workshop by the veteran journalist on his rural development project PARI (People’s Archives of Rural India). It is a part of the tenth edition of Media Manthan, a National level media fest organised by the post-graduate department of Journalism and Mass Communication of St. Aloysius College.

P. Sainath is a veteran journalist and media activist who has an avid interest in rural reporting. People’s Archives of Rural India (PARI), a digital journalism platform is an initiative put forward by him which aims to document rural Indian lives and livelihood. Sainath is also a teacher who has trained over 1000 media persons across 27 years.

Media Manthan is a media festival by the PG Department of Mass Communication of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous). Besides endowment lecture and workshop by P. Sainath, the fest holds various media-related competitions for the students of various colleges from across the state.

Mangaluru, May 18: The coastal district of Dakshina Kannada today reported two more covid-19 positive cases. One is a 30-year-old man and the other is a 55-year-old woman.

The man, a resident of Karopady in Bantwal, had returned from Raigad in Maharashtra and is under quarantine.

The woman, a resident of Yeyyadi, had fever and hence visited Wenlock hospital for test. She was diagnosed to have Severe acute respiratory infection (SARI) symptoms and later tested positive. She has been shifted to ICU. 

With this the total number of covid-19 positive cases in the district rose to 54. Among them 48 are from Dakshina Kannada and six patients are from other districts.
