Dr Santhosh Soans elected National President of Pediatric Critical Care Association

satosh Mangalore, December 27: City based pediatrician Dr. Santhosh T. Soans has been elected as the National President of Intensive Care Chapter of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) during the election held recently at New Delhi. He will serve as President-Elect during 2012 and as President during 2013. Intensive Care Chapter is an autonomous wing of IAP devoted to the sub specialty of pediatric critical care and has branches all over the country. Dr. Soans is the first Kannadiga to be elected to this prestigious position. Earlier he was the National Vice President of IAP for the year 2010.

A pioneer in the field of Pediatric Intensive Care in Karnataka, he has been instrumental in propagating professionalized approach to pediatric intensive care. He has enabled rapid expansion of critical care facilities in this part of the state by helping establish pediatric intensive care units in hospitals, organizing critical care training for doctors and nurses. He has organized two major regional level conferences on critical care medicine – 'Criticon 2003' and 'Criticon 2005', apart from serving as the Executive Secretary of Indo US Emergency Medicine Summit held at Mangalore in 2008 and as Organizing Secretary of Karnataka Pedicon 2009, the state level conference of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP).

He is the chief organizer for the 14th National Conference for Pediatric Critical Care (NCPCC) to be held in Mangalore in November 2012.

At present he is also the National Convener of IAP Pediatric Heads of Departments Cell, National Convener of IAP National Satellite Linked Continuing Medical Education (in association with ISRO Master Control Facility, Hassan), National Convener of IAP Pediatric Faculty Training Progamme.

Dr. Soans studied MBBS at Kasturba Medical College, Mangalore and acquired his MD and DCH degrees in Pediatrics from Kasturba Medical College, Manipal / Mangalore. This was followed by a brief stint abroad after which he returned to Mangalore to join Fr. Muller's Hospital and Medical College as a Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Chief of Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Presently he serves as Professor and Head of the Department of Pediatrics and Chief of Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at AJ Institute of Medical Science.

All through his career, Dr. Soans has taken a keen interest in pediatric intensive care and adopted it as his professional specialization.

He is actively involved in the activities of Indian Academy of Pediatrics (IAP) and has served four terms as its executive board member representing Karnataka state. Prior to this, he has served for ten years as the Joint Secretary of IAP Karnataka state branch. He is also the Founder President of IAP Intensive Care Chapter Karnataka, Founder Chairman of Indian Society for Critical Care Medicine, Mangalore Chapter and Past Editor of 'The Intensivist', the official journal of IAP Intensive Care Chapter.

Kerala: Muslims Make Way For Hindu Temple Procession During Anti-CAA Protests

Jan 28: Hindu temple processions with an elephant adorned in ornaments carrying the idol, with percussionists and devotees walking side by side, are no new sight in Kerala. However, a similar procession in Kerala's cultural capital, Thrissur, turned heads. Hundreds of Muslims were seen holding hands and clearing traffic to help the procession move smoothly.

Muslims made way for the passage of a Hindu temple procession during their protest against Citizenship Amendment Act(ACT) in Thrissur on Saturday, January 25.

Various Muslim organisations had organised a mass protest in the Swaraj ground in the town. On the same day, the local Bhaktapriyam temple's procession was also taking place. Stuck in a dilemma, the temple authorities approached the police and the Muslim organisations to find a solution. The Muslim organisations then promised to help proceed the temple procession without any obstacles.

Nearly a thousand people who had turned up for the protest volunteered to clear traffic and control the crowd so that the temple procession could smoothly pass through the town.

A video of the procession was shared on Facebook by the Thrissur City Police on Saturday, which showed Muslims holding hands on either side of the procession to make way.

"Humanity is bigger than religion. That's the lesson the residents of Thrissur are giving to the country. Thrissur is truly the cultural capital of Kerala," read the caption of the post in Malayalam. The video soon went viral and was viewed by over 36k views.

COVID-19: Karnataka records biggest single-day spike as 149 test positive; total 1,395

Bengaluru, May 19: Karnataka on Tuesday recorded the highest single-day rise in the COVID-19 cases in the state as a whooping 149 people tested positive for the virus. With the spike in new cases, the overall tally has risen to 1,395.

This is for the first time the state recorded 100 plus cases in a single day. So far, 40 people have also succumbed to the virus including three deaths today.

The new deaths consist of a 61-year-old male patient, a resident of Ballari; a 65-year-old male patient, a resident of Vijayapura; and a 54-year-old male patient from Bengaluru.

Among the new cases, a maximum of 71 are reported from Mandya, followed by 22 in Davanagere, 10 in Shivamogga, 13 in Kalaburgi, six in Bengaluru Urban, four each in Udupi and Uttara Kannada, five in Chikkamagaluru, three in Hassan and one each in Yadagiri, Chitradurga, Vijayapura, Gadag.

Most of the new cases are of the people who traveled to Mumbai in Maharashtra, Solapur, Ahmedabad, and Kerala.

The remaining are those who came in contact with the people who had tested positive earlier.

At present, 811 people are actively taking treatment, while 543 have been discharged after recovery.

D K Shivakumar is the boss of Karnataka Congress; Satish, Saleem, Eshwar working presidents

Bengaluru, Mar 11: DK Shivakumar has been appointed as the new president of the party's Karnataka unit, an official said on Wednesday.

"Congress president (Sonia Gandhi) has appointed D.K. Shivakumar as the president of the Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC)," said party's general secretary K.C. Venugopal in a statement from New Delhi.

Party's state unit leaders Eshwar Khandre, Satish Jharkiholi and Saleem Ahammed are the working presidents in the southern state.

"Former chief minister Siddaramaiah will continue as the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) leader and opposition leader in the state legislative assembly.

MLC M. Narayanswamy and MLA Ajay Singh will be the party's chief whips in the state legislative council and assembly.

Congress appoints Anil Chaudhary as DPCC chief

The Congress on Wednesday appointed former MLA Anil Chaudhary as its Delhi unit chief, while also naming five vice-presidents for the DPCC.

Congress president Sonia Gandhi named Chaudhary president and Abhishek Dutt, Shivani Chopra, Jaikishan, Mudit Agarwal and Ali Hassan vice-presidents of the Delhi Pradesh Congress Committee (DPCC), a party statement said.

Subhash Chopra had resigned as the Delhi Congress chief in February, taking moral responsibility for the party's debacle in the Assembly polls.

The Congress drew a blank for the second time in a row in the Delhi Assembly polls and reduced its vote share from 9.7 per cent in 2015 to 4.27 per cent this time.
