CM to consider Achuthanandan's demand for medical treatment to Madani

Mangalore, January 1: Sources in Karnataka Chief Minister's office have confirmed that Kerala opposition leader V S Achuthanandan urged D V Sadananda Gowda through a letter to take steps for proper medical treatment to PDP leader Abdul Nasser Madani, an accused in the 2008 Bangalore serial blasts.

The octogenarian Marxist leader in his letter to Mr Gowda also wanted the prosecution to speed up trial of Madani, who had been languishing in jail near Bangalore since August 2010.

The CM will consider the Achuthanandan's demand. However Karnataka is to respond to the letter, sources said.

On Thursday, Achuthanandan had revealed that Madani had written to him, saying his health condition was quite bad and that he required expert medical treatment.

However, the CPM leader said he was bitterly opposed to the activities of Madani and his supporters. “If Madani was found guilty of charges brought against him, he deserved punishment. At the same time, inordinately delaying the trial in any case involved denial of human rights and justice, he said.

Madani was arrested from his camp at Anwarssery in Kollam district in August 2010 by Karnataka police in connection with the 2008 Bangalore serial blast case.

Bengaluru, Aug 2: A total of 5,532 new cases of COVID-19 and 84 deaths were reported in Karnataka in the last 24 hours, the state's health department informed on Sunday.

With this, the Karnataka's COVID-19 tally now stands at 1,34,819 positive cases, including 74,590 active cases and 57,725 discharges.
So far, 2,496 deaths have been reported from the state.

India's COVID-19 count on Sunday crossed the 17 lakh-mark with 54,736 positive cases and 853 deaths reported in the country.

"The total COVID-19 cases stand at 17,50,724 including 5,67,730 active cases, 11,45,630 cured/discharged/migrated and 37,364 deaths," said the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry.

Bengaluru, Aug 9: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has expressed condolences over the death of nodal officer who died while being on COVID-19 duty and announced an ex-gratia of Rs 25 lakhs to the family of the deceased.

The deceased has been identified as H Gangadharaiah. As per reports, he died due to a heart attack while on COVID-19 duty.

A government job and Rs 25 lakhs will be provided to the officer's family, according to Karnataka Chief Minister's Office (CMO).

"Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa expressed his heartfelt condolences over the death of H Gangadharaiah, KAS, who was on COVID-19 duty as nodal officer at the Bangalore International Exhibition Centre (BIEC)," Karnataka CMO tweeted.

"CM announced Rs 25 lakhs ex-gratia from Chief Minister's Relief Fund, a government job for a family member and instructed the last rites of Gangadharaiah to be performed with full state honours," the CMO added.

In the last 24 hours, 7,178 new COVID-19 cases (including 2665 in Bengaluru Urban), 93 deaths and 5,006 discharged cases were reported in Karnataka.

The total number of cases rises to 1,72,102 in the state, including 79,765 active cases, 89,238 discharges and 3,091 deaths, as per the State's Health Department.

Bengaluru, Apr 25: Former Karnataka Health minister and senior Congress leader Dr H C Mahadevappa on Saturday urged the state government to chalk out a comprehensive plan to conduct tests among the vulnerable sections in the society to impede the spread of the dreaded COVID-19 pandemic in the state.

Speaking to media persons, Dr Mahadevappa, felt that only restricting people to remain indoors will not suffice to tackle the spread of the contagious disease he said that "There needs to step up testing the people especially belonging to the vulnerable sections of the society".

Maintaining that the COVID-19 disease, which has progressed itself as a pandemic, across the globe, former Health Minister said that "there is also a need to fight the menace with multiple dimension, as it has potential to cause damage not only the social life of the people but also their livelihood".
