Naxalites failed in forcing their ideology on villagers, says IGP

Mangalore, January 2: Terming the brutal murder of Sadashiva Gowda, a 'desperate act' of naxalites, Inspector-General of Police (Western Range) Pratap Reddy clarified that he was not a police informer.

Gowda, a resident of Kabbinale village, and basket weaver by profession, was found murdered near Hebri, in Udupi district, in the forests of the Western Ghats on December 28.

“The police strongly believe that the murder of the villager was a desperate act by the naxalites, who were finding it difficult to force their ideology on local people”, Mr Reddy said in an informal chat with media persons.

Mr Reddy said that the police department is looking at this case purely from the criminal side, where the right of an individual has been violated.

He also said the naxalite issue should be dealt from a holistic perspective. “The scope of police in the Western Range in maintaining law and order and detecting crimes had widened in view of development projects verses environmental issues and development projects verses people. Police would have to identify the 'possible friction points' by various angles for maintaining law and order”, he said.

Liquor worth Rs 197 crore sold in Karnataka on second day of lockdown relaxation

Bengaluru, May 6: The second day of liquor sales in Karnataka on Tuesday after easing of lockdown curbs saw a nearly five-fold jump in earnings, with Rs 197 crore worth spirits being sold.

According to top Excise Department officials, 4.21 lakh cases of Indian-made liquor, comprising 36.37 lakh litres, worth Rs 182 crore and 7.02 lakh litres of beer in 0.90 lakh cases worth Rs 15 crore was sold on Tuesday.

On Monday, when sales resumed in the state, Rs 45 crore worth liquor was sold.

"We had never expected such a record sale. It's unprecedented," an Excise official who did not wish to be named said.

Liquor sales had resumed in Karnataka on Monday after a 41 day gap following the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Karnataka Minister CT Ravi tests positive for COVID-19

Bengaluru, Jul 13: Karnataka Minister CT Ravi has tested positive for COVID-19. However, his wife and staff members have tested negative.

"Yesterday, I along with my wife Pallavi and my staff members underwent COVID-19 test. Fortunately, my wife Pallavi and all my staff members are tested negative. Third umpire's result for me has confirmed that I'm COVID Positive. However, I'm feeling absolutely fine," Ravi tweeted.

"For now, I'll continue to work from here and undergo treatment. Very soon, I'll get cured and come back to work with you all," he added.
So far, Karnataka has reported 36,216 COVID-19 cases, according to the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare.

Karnataka: Covid-19 death toll increases to 30; total cases cross 700-mark

Bengaluru, May 7: A 55-year old woman from Davanagere became the 30th COVID-19 related fatality in Karnataka, where a total number of infections has crossed 700-mark, with eight new positive cases being confirmed, the health department said on Thursday.

The deceased woman was a known case of diabetes and hypertension, she was admitted with a complaint of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI) and was on a ventilator, the department said in its mid-day situation update.

She died today at a designated hospital in Davanagere, it said.

"Eight new positive cases have been reported from last evening to this noon...

Till date 701 COVID-19 positive cases have been confirmed. This includes 30 deaths and 363 discharges," the update said.

The eight new cases reported include three from Davangere, indulging the deceased patient; also three from Kalaburagi, and one each from Hirebagewadi in Belagavi district and Bengaluru urban.

While four cases are contacts of patients earlier tested positive, three are with the history of Influenza-Like Illness (ILI) and one is a SARI case.

Five among eight new cases are women and three are men.
