Mangalore, January 3: Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat continued general body meeting had heated discussion over the alleged anomalies and shortcomings in the survey conducted to find the total number of Koraga families requiring houses in the district.

While a section of the officials affirmed that survey was conducted to ascertain the number of Koraga families in the district and gave out information collected during the survey, members of Zilla Panchayat objected to the same saying that the officials are giving out wrong information as no survey was conducted at many places in the district.

As per the survey conducted by the officials, 586 Koraga families, need house in the district. As many as 273 families are already living in houses constructed on the government or private land according to the survey report. A proposal to construct houses for 313 Koraga families has been sent to the Government.

Deputy Secretary Shivaramegowda said that in Puttur there are 20 Koragas who have their own land while 38 are living on private land. In Sullia there are 23 families who have their own land, 44 in Belthangady, 179 in Mangalore, 49 in Bantwal.

Many of Zilla Panchayat members, irrespective of party differences raised objections and said that survey teams had never visited villages in their respective wards and even if they had visited it was not brought to the notice of the elected representatives of the area.

Looking at the unprepared and half baked answers of the officials, Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr K N Vijayprakash sternly said that he would be compelled to initiate disciplinary action against the officials if they come to the meetings unprepared. “Conduct survey taking elected representatives, Panchayat Development Officials and others into confidence. There is a format to be followed while conducting this survey. No official can violate the format and conduct survey as per their own convenience,” said that CEO.

As far as construction of houses is concerned for the Koragas plan is to build house at a cost of Rs 2.10 lakh per house. Official concerned said that they would require a total of 657.30 lakh. Integrated Tribal Development Programme at present has Rs 237.75 lakh central fund and Rs 41.50 State fund.

“Corporate companies like KIOCL, MRPL, MSEZ have been approached to sponsor some funds. They have agreed to give some share. Since couple of these companies are seeking tax exemption, they cannot provide the amount directly to Zilla Panchayat. Hence we will be opening a Trust headed by Zilla Panchayat CEO,” he said.

Unlike the meeting held on 23/12/2011, the continued meeting witnessed some fruitful discussion with members participating giving priority on issues rather than party.

One minute silence was observed during the beginning of the meet to pay homage to former chief minister S Bangarappa and former ZP chief Santhosh Kumar Bhandary.

Feb 26: The Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday claimed that it prevented Karnataka from discussing the contentious Mekedatu reservoir issue at the Cauvery Water Management Authority (CWMA) meeting held in New Delhi.

Besides the representatives of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka at the fifth meeting of CWMA, presided over by Central Water Commission Chairman R K Jain, officials of Kerala and Puducherry also participated.

CWMA member and TN PWD Secretary K Manivasan told reporters after the meeting that the state government prevented Karnataka from discussing the dam issue by pointing out the pending petitions in the Supreme Court against the project filed by the E Palaniswami government.

"We have told participants of the meeting that Mekedatu reservoir will be against the interests of Tamil Nadu and its farmers. Our consistent stand is that it should not be built at any cost. Finally the issue was not discussed in the meeting," Manivasan said.

The Mekedatu reservoir is proposed to be constructed by Karnataka across Cauvery river near Mekedatu, about 110 km from Bengaluru, in Kanakapura taluk.

It was first proposed along with Shivanasamudra hydro power project at Shimsa in 2003 with an intention to use the water for a hydro power station and supply drinking water to Bengaluru city. It was designed to store 67 tmc feet of water.

While Tamil Nadu is claiming that the construction of a balancing reservoir will disturb Cauvery water flow to the state affecting irrigation, Karnataka says the project is basically designed to take care of the drinking water needs of Bengaluru after releasing water to Tamil Nadu as per the quantum specified by the Cauvery water disputes tribunal.

United Nations, Jul 25: UN report on terrorism has warned that there are “significant numbers” of ISIS terrorists in Kerala and Karnataka, noting that the al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent terror group, which reportedly has between 150 and 200 militants from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Myanmar, is planning attacks in the region.

The 26th report of the Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team concerning ISIS, al-Qaida and associated individuals and entities said that the al-Qaida in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) operates under the Taliban umbrella from Nimruz, Helmand and Kandahar provinces of Afghanistan.

“The group reportedly has between 150 and 200 members from Bangladesh, India, Myanmar and Pakistan. The current leader of AQIS is Osama Mahmood…, who succeeded the late Asim Umar… AQIS is reportedly planning retaliation operations in the region to avenge the death of its former leader,” it said.

According to the report, “One member state reported that the ISIL Indian affiliate (Hind Wilayah), which was announced on May 10, 2019, has between 180 and 200 members”.

It said that there are “significant numbers of ISIL operatives in Kerala and Karnataka states.”

In May last year, the Islamic State (also known as ISIS, ISIL or Daesh) terror group claimed to have established a new "province" in India, the first of its kind announcement that came after clashes between militants and security forces in Kashmir.

The dreaded terror outfit, through its Amaq News Agency, had said that the Arabic name of the new branch is "Wilayah of Hind" (India Province).

A senior Jammu and Kashmir police officer had rejected the claim.

Previously, ISIS attacks in Kashmir were linked to its so-called Khorasan Province branch, which was set up in 2015 to cover "Afghanistan, Pakistan and nearby lands".
