Hundreds of students march to create awareness about tobacco abuse

Mangalore, January 5: Nearly 600 students of Captianio High School (Aided) took out an awareness rally on “Prohibition o Tobacco and Smoking” here on Thursday raising slogans and displaying placards against the use of tobacco products.

The rally commenced from the school premises in Nagori and traversed through Pumpwell Circle and Karavali Circle before returning to the school premises.

The rally was preceded by a small function which began with prayers by the students of Capitanio school. Udaya, executive of Manipal Life Skills, the organizers of the event, delivered a welcome speech.

Praveen U.M., manager, training – Edumedia India Pvt. Limited Bangalore gave an overview of the activities of the Manipal Life Skills.

Philomena Lobo, Joint Director of Public Instruction Department, Bhaskar Chandra Shetty, Corporator, Kankanady Ward, Moses Jayashekhar, DDPI, Public Instruction Department, Mangalore were the chief guests.

Muniswami Neelakanta, Sub Inspector, Rural Police Station, Kankanady, spoke on safety measures. Rajesh, executive of Manipal Life Skills proposed a vote of thanks.

Manipal Life Skills is a joint initiative by the Manipal Foundation and Edumedia India Pvt. Ltd, which seeks to impart value-aided education across 48 Government and Government-aided Schools from Mangalore Taluk, Mangalore City and Bantwal Taluk.

The organization holds similar programmes on a fortnightly basis in different schools as part of the project, which commenced in August last year.

Bengaluru, Jun 26: Karnataka Congress president DK Shivakumar on Thursday suggested that the cost of building and installing a new statue of Nada Prabhu Kempegowda in the Bengaluru airport should be borne by Kempegowda international airport (KIAL).

Shivakumar wrote to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and welcomed the decision of erecting a statute of Bengaluru founder Kempegowda at KIAL but he also suggested that the chief minister should not spend state government's money on this.

He said that the Karnataka government has done many favours to airport authority earlier.

Hubballi, May 14: South Western Railway (SWR) has so far ferried about 54,000 passengers, including migrant workers, students and stranded people to 11 states to reach their home towns by Shramik Special trains.

So far 40 Shramik Specials were run one each from Kabakaputtur in Mysuru and Hubballi and remaining 38 from Chikkabanavara/Malur from Bengaluru area. About 54,000 passengers were ferried to different parts of the country. Maximum Shramik Specials trains train services were run to Lucknow (9) and Danapur (7).

Shramik Specials were run to Bihar (Bakora, Danapur, Baruni, Darbhanga), West Bengal (Purila, Bankura, New Jalpaiguri), Jharkhand (Hatia, Barkakana), Rajasthan (Jaipur, Udaipur), Uttar Pradesh (Lucknow, Gorakhpur), Orissa (Bhubaneswar), Madhya Pradesh (Gwalior), Uttarakhand (Haridwar), Himachal Pradesh (Una), Tripura (Agartala) and Jammu and Kashmir (Udhampur).

SWR is transporting passengers to their destination as per the demand of the State Government with proper protocol and the receiving State Government is ready to accept them.

Udupi, Jan 25: The accused, who planted a crude bomb at the Mangalore International Airport on January 20, was brought to Udupi on Saturday, to collect information, as part of the spot investigation, police said here.

According to police officials, accused Aditya Rao was brought to Karnataka Bank Kadiyali branch, where Rao had a Safe Locker. The team opened the locker and seized the documents, along with a Box.

They said the seized documents, along with the Box, will be sent to the FSL for investigation.
