Pejavar mutt seer begins 3-day fast over power plant issue; says he is not against Putthige seer

Udupi, January 9: Pejavar mutt head Sri Visvesha Thirtha Swamiji on Monday launched a three-day fast protesting the state government's decision to drop two experts appointed to a panel to study the environmental impact on the proposed thermal power plant at Nandikur, which he has been opposing.

Putthige Mutt seer Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji, Palimaru Mutt seer Vidyadheesha Theertha Swamiji, Kemaru Mutt seer Eesha Vittala Swamiji and Working President of the Jana Jagruthi Samithi Nandikur Balakrishna Shetty, Raitha Sangha District President Vijay Hegde and others participated in the protest dharna.

Visvesha Thirtha Swamiji said that state government had dropped two of the members from the expert committee for the reason that they had given a media statement prior to submitting a report to the government.

“When contacted CM Sadananda Gowda showed at Higher Education Minister Dr VS Acharya for the decision. Dr VS Acharya who approached me saying that I shall suggest two other names to be included in to the committee. Dr Acharya even said that neither he took any benefits from the Lanco, the promoters of the UPCL plant nor his doctor children set up a hospital in Hyderabad with the support of the Lanco, as alleged by some people”, he said adding, “I feel it was not fair on the part of the state government to drop two of the members from the expert committee, at a juncture when the committee almost set to submit its report”.

Pejavar announced to place his demands at the end of his fasting on Wednesday before the government.

'Not against Putthige seer'

Visvesha Thirtha Swamiji also said that he was not against Putthige Mutt pontiff Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji participating in the Paryaya festivities.

Replying to press persons Pejavar said, “I will not have any objection to Putthige seer Sugunendra Theertha participating in the Paryaya programme. I will continue to participate in the festivities if Putthige pontiff participates in the same”.

Pejavar expressed his helplessness in the issue saying, “three of the Ashta Matadhipathies (Krishnapur Mutt seer, Palimaru Mutt seer and Pejavar Junior seer), including my junior, who did not offer poojas to lord Krishna, during the Putthige paryaya period, are opposing his participation. Unless there is unanimity I cannot give a judgment in the case”.

Putthige Mutt seer Sri Sugunendra Theertha Swamiji who joined Pejavar pontiff at the fasting venue in Nandikur said that he was under pressure from his followers to participate in the Paryaya festivities. His followers have decided to take him lifting in the Paryaya procession.

Udupi, Jun 30: The novel coronavirus has claimed another life in the coastal district. The throat swabs of a 48-year-old man who breathed his last two days ago tested positive today. 

With this, the covid-19 death toll in the district rose to 3.

The man, who was a native of Kalthodu in Byndoor, had returned from Mumbai on June 2. He breathed his last on June 28 at his residence. 

The deceased’s swabs were collected on the same day. The report came today. He was reportedly suffering from some illnesses.

The funeral of the deceased was held as per protocol. The swab samples of primary contacts of the deceased were also taken.

Mangaluru, Feb 28: Two labourers lost their lives as they were buried alive in a landslip at Karangalpady Junction near Bunts Hostel in the city today.

The landslip occurred when a compound wall collapsed burying at least five persons under the debris. It is feared that three people are still under the debris.

The deceased have been identified as Mohammad Masood (20) from West Bengal and Bhimappa (25) from Bagalkote.

Local police and fire fighters are carrying out rescue operation.

Bengaluru, May 17: Amidst mounting demand form Kannadigas across the world for repatriation flights in the wake of covid-19 lockdown, Dr Arathi Krishna, former Deputy Chairman of the NRI Forum of Karnataka government, has written to Hardeep Singh Puri Minister of Civil Aviation to operate more special flights to Gulf repatriate Kannadigas from gulf countries. 

Dr Arathi Krishna’s first request in the letter was to add flights from Kuwait, Bahrain and Jeddah to Bengaluru as many (from Karnataka) are stranded in these cities in precarious situations.

In addition, she also requested for a couple of flights from Dammam and Riyadh to Bengaluru as there are more than 3780 Kannadigas registered to return from Saudi Arabia and members of Bearys Chamber of Commerce and Industry are requesting the same. Any number of flights from Dubai to Bengaluru and Mangaluru will also help the stranded people, the letter stated. 

“Old and sick people, pregnant women and others are in urgent need to connect with the world are looking up to you for getting flights from different comers of the world. Indian communities are hopeful that you will use your position to help them to get the much needed mobility at this time,” the letter stated. 

She also said that the people in Karnataka are grateful to you (Mr Hardeep Singh Puri) for adding two flights from Dubai to Bengaluru in the last two schedules and one flight each from Riyadh, Dammam, Muscat and Doha.

Dr Arathi Krishna is currently serving as the Chairman of the NRI Cell of Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee and Secretary of Indian Overseas Congress.
