Manipal University, Kasturba Hospital win laurels at Masters Athletic Championship

Manipal, January 10: Manipal University and Kasturba Hospital athletes won seven gold, 13 silver, and three bronze medals to enable Udupi district win the 32nd Karnataka Masters Athletic Championship organised by the Mandya District Masters Athletic Association at Sir Visvesvaraya Kridangana in Mandya on January 7 and 8.

A release issued by Kasturba Hospital here on Monday said the meet served as trial for the 33rd National Masters Athletic Championship to be held in Bangalore from February 22, 2012. The gold and silver winners and eight members of the team had qualified for the national meet.

The winners from Manipal University and Kasturba Hospital, Manipal, are: Latha Kumari — gold in 100 m hurdles and gold in 800 m and silver in 5 km walk; Vishalakshi — gold in 200m and 400 m and silver in 800 m; Shaija Mathew — gold in long jump, silver in 100m and 200m; Shanthi Fernandes — gold in shot put and silver in discuss throw; Narayana M. — gold in 5,000m walk; Ujwal Kiran — silver in shot put, discuss throw, and javelin throw; Nirmala Nayak — silver in 200m and 400m, bronze in 100m; Devaki — silver in 800m and bronze in hammer throw; Devaraj — bronze in 5,000m walk.

The athletes were felicitated at a function in Kasturba Hospital, the release added.

Kasaragod, Jul 22: An accused in a POCSO case jumped into the sea at Kasaba Coast near here on Wednesday.

Sources said the accused Mahesh (28), resident of Soorlu Kanhangad, was brought to the groyne ('pulimuttu' in Malayalam) at the coast for collecting evidence.

He escaped from the police and ran around 200 meters towards the sea and jumped into it. The effort to rescue him also failed.

Police, Fire & Rescue officials and fishermen are searching for the body of the accused.

Mahesh was arrested on charge of capturing the video of a minor girl in a washroom on his mobile. 

During interrogation, he had told the copse that he had hidden the mobile, which was used to video record the act, near the groyne. Accordingly, the police had brought him to this place.

Mangaluru, Jun 8: Forum Fiza Mall in Mangaluru on Monday reopened for public after Ministry of Home Affairs allowed the reopening of shopping malls from June 8 with certain precautionary measures amid COVID-19 pandemic.

People visited the mall wearing masks and maintaining social distancing.

Earlier, the Union Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had said that religious places and places of worship for public, hotels, restaurants and other hospitality services along with shopping malls will be permitted to open from June 8.

However, these facilities will not be able to resume operations inside containment zones designated by authorities in states, said a government notification.

Udupi, July 14: Due to rising COVID-19 cases in this district, Deputy Commissioner G Jagadeesh on Tuesday, announced that the border will be sealed down from July 15.

Speaking to newsmen here on Tuesday, he said “Inter-district travelers will not be allowed to enter Udupi for 14 days from 8 pm on Wednesday, however, we won’t be imposing complete lockdown in the district.”

The decision was taken in the meeting held in his chamber in which Legislators Haladi Srinivas Shetty (Kundapur), Sunil Kumar (Karkala), Rghupathi Bhat (Udupi), Sukumar Shetty (Byndoor), among others were present.
