Made Snana': CM sets a rider to ban ritual

Bangalore, January 11: D V Sadananda Gowda on Tuesday said the state government would take a decision on banning 'Made Snana,' the controversial ritual of people rolling on leftovers of food partaken by upper castes, only after extensive public consultation, even as one of his Cabinet ministers said the government was committed to banning the practice.

“I neither support nor condemn the ritual. The government decision will be based on public opinion”, Gowda told reporters.

In Dharwad, Social Welfare Minister A Narayana Swamy said the government was committed to banning the practice observed in several temples of the State, notably Kukke Subrahmanya.

Replying to questions from mediapersons, Narayanaswamy said the issue of banning 'Made Snana' was discussed at length during the Legislature session. “Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister S Suresh Kumar advocated a ban on such practices. Taking a serious note of it, the government has decided to ban the practice shortly,” he said.

When pointed out that a few seers were in favour of such practices, the minister refused to comment. He, however, said that the department was striving to abolish such practices in society and had even approached Dr B R Ambedkar Research Centre to conduct a survey on the origin of such practices.

The government will also hold an open discussion in Bangalore shortly, where elected representatives, seers, social workers and the general public will participate.The deliberations of the discussion will be implemented, he added.

Shivamogga, Jan 11: Members of Karnataka Congress women's wing staged a protest in Shivamogga on Friday against the rise in onion prices and domestic LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) cylinders.

As a mark of protest, the demonstrators wore garlands made of onions, drew rangoli on the road and cooked food with firewood. The protestors also carried posters comparing the price of cylinders in Congress and BJP-led government in the Centre.

The price of non-subsidised LPG was hiked by Rs 19 per cylinder from January 1, 2020.

Bengaluru, Mar 5: At 11 am on Friday, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa will present the State Budget for the 2020-2021 fiscal. Coming at a time when the state is facing financial challenges, the budget is expected to have minor tax shocks for citizens, while making space for big-ticket allocations to the agriculture and water resources ministries. Thursday's budget will be Yediyurappa’s seventh.

“Agriculture is our primary focus. The recent gazette notification of the Mahadayi tribunal order is a welcome move for Karnataka and we will make budgetary allocations for this too,” the CM had said.

The cut back in devolution of funds for Karnataka from the divisible pool, trimming of funds from the Union Government for Centrally-sponsored schemes and tax collections falling short of revenue targets have made matters tough for Yediyurappa. The consolation may be the part payment of one installment of GST compensation from the Centre. The GST compensation, in part for the October-November period, was released to the state in time for tabling of the budget.

Mangaluru, Jan 13: At least one lakh people from across the twin districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi are likely to attend the protest meet against CAA-NRC on January 15 at Adyar Kannur in Mangaluru.

Massive preparations are going on at the Shaha Garden in Adyar where the event is expected to start at 2:30 p.m.

Organisers have urged the people to make the event successful one by maintain peace and not giving an opportunity for trouble mongers to disrupt the event.

Addressing a press meet here today, K S Mohammad Masood, president of the Muslim Central Committee of DK and Udupi, said that senior activists and priests from different religions also will take part in the event.

The guest list includes acclaimed thinker and activist Harsh Mander, former IAS officer Kannan Gopinathan, retired Supreme Court judge Venkate Gopala Gowda.

Mangaluru Bishop Peter Paul Saldanha, Jnanaprakash Swamiji of Mysuru, Mangaluru Khazi Thwaka Ahmed Musliyar, Udupi Khazi Bekal Musliyar, Ullal Khazi Fazal Koyamma Thangal, JIH leader Mohammed Kunhi and PFI leader Mohammad Shaqib also will among dozens of guests.
