Mangalore, January 14: In the Hindu calendar the movements of the planets plays an important role in our daily life. The significance of the Sun is one of the most important factors during the month of January. The Sun is continuously changing its position and even though it is the centre of our solar system, its position during the first half of the year is called “Uttarayana” and during the second half of the year it is called “Dakshinayana”. So, the event of the sun changing its position from one rashi to another is called 'Sankranthi'.

This is the festivity which is celebrated on January 14 and is called with different names 'Makara Sankramana' or ' Makara Sankranthi'. It symbolises the gradual movement of the sun from one 'rashi' to another. On Sankranthi day the sun's phase changes from Chandramana to Souramana. During the Souramana phase the months 'Mesha' slowly changes over till 'Meena'. Thus the first phase of the year which is called 'Uttarayana' begins. The auspicious day of Sankranthi marks the beginning of Uttarayana. During this punyakala many devotees visit the temples and offer their prayers. They worship Lord Ganesha and offer him fruits. Some devotees even perform 'Homas' on the temple premises. One of the popular temples in the city , Kadri temple had many devotees sitting with purohits for Homa. According to one of the purohits, Krishna Adiga, “Sankranthi is almost like a transition in many people's lives and hence our temple arranges homas and we welcome families to come out and observe the day.” The Uttarayana is for six months and only from Karkataka Sankranti , Dakshinayana starts.

The celebration of Sankranthi is not complete without devotees offering ' Naivedyam' . One of the preparations which purohits do is the 'Panchakajjaya' which is a mixture of puffed rice with jaggery, banana, aralu and coconut. All deities are worshipped during this festival including the Naga or snake god. The dieties are offered 'Naivedyam' or rice.

Sankranthi is also the time when thousands of devotees of Swami Ayyappa follow strict discipline and perform poojas to the lord. They do this until they make their journey to Shabarimala where they culminate to see the ' Makara Jyothi' on this auspicious day. Families usually celebrate the festival either by performing Homas or visit friends and relatives to distribute Jaggery, Ellu and a sweet preparation from Sugar. At some homes, Ganahoma or Satyanarayana Pooja is performed.

Hubballi, June 8: If everything goes as expected, the railway station in Hubballi, the commercial capital of the state and also the headquarters of South Western Railway (SWR), will have the world’s longest railway platform next year.

E Vijaya, chief public relation officer of SWR, said the work is being done as part of doubling between Hubballi and Bengaluru.

“At present, Hubballi has five platforms, and the number will be increased to eight. Inspection carriage line is getting converted to full platform.

Platform No. 1 will be extended from 550m to 1,400m with 10m width. At present, Gorakhpur’s 1,366m platform is the world’s longest facility,” the officer said.

She added that one more entry point is coming up at Gadag Road. “Rs 90 crore is being spent on the works related to full yard, signalling, electrical and building.

The works, started in November 2019, will be completed in the next one year,” said Vijaya.

Bengaluru, Jan 7: Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday said the much-awaited cabinet expansion will take place in about a week to 10 days and that he wants to complete the exercise before his proposed visit to Davos to attend the World Economic Forum meet later this month.

"Cabinet expansion has to be done in a week or 8-10 days. There is also information that Amit Shah will be coming to Bengaluru on January 16 or 18. Before that I will go to Delhi and get things cleared and will expand the cabinet at the earliest," Mr Yediyurappa said.

Speaking to reporters in Bengaluru, he said he wanted to complete the exercise before his Davos visit.

"I will make all efforts to expand the cabinet before that," he said.

With Mr Yediyurappa making it clear that 11 of the disqualified JDS-Congress MLAs who got re-elected in the December 5 bypolls on BJP tickets will be made ministers, lobbying has been on within the party for the remaining ministerial berths.

Currently, there are 18 ministers, including the Chief Minister, in the cabinet that has a sanctioned strength of 34.

Cabinet expansion will not be an easy task for the Chief Minister as he will have to strike a balance by accommodating the victorious disqualified legislators as promised and also make space for the old guards, upset at being "neglected" in the first round of the induction exercise.

He also has to give adequate representation to various castes and regions in his cabinet and also deal with the allocation of key portfolios.

The Chief Minister, who has indicated that the ministry expansion may take place any time after Sankranti, is likely to travel to Davos on January 20, according to sources.

BS Yediyurappa, along with Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Mansukh Mandaviya, as well as Chief Ministers Amarinder Singh, Kamal Nath, are expected to join over 100 Indian CEOs at Davos in Switzerland later this month for the WEF's 50th annual meeting, which will be attended by thousands from across the globe.
